The most interesting bit is the exhaust manifold on the skyactive engine.

That motor is also massively undersquare, especially compared with the regular 2 liter and that helps the MPGs.

That wiki page kind of sucks. Over square engines are known to make better torque and are more thermodynamically efficient. I don't know all the specifics, but nothing of that nature is mentioned in that article.

The problem with cars these days is that they are so blasted expensive! I bought a 2012 Versa a couple weeks ago for 15,500 out the door which is just about as cheap as a new car gets. I could have had an Aveo for a little more coin (and why would anyone do that?!?!). I saw a loaded up Focus at the Ford dealer with a sticker price of 27k, wtf!

So far I am averaging 37.6 MPG with the Versa in mostly city driving. After running the numbers it will cost the same amount of money to drive to 100k miles than an $8000 Accord with 100k miles on it to begin with.

What does the new Mazda cost?

That was also the FED Via the D.O.T. mandating lots of heavy and costly safe requirements remember? And yes there are many people that want to drive around beer cans, look at all the fools buying up Prius's's'sssss Focus's's'sss, Mazda 3's and similar sub compacts.
