    coupe deville

Very random, and quick response needed.

One of my roomates just found an '86 Coupe DeVille v6 FWD on CL with 76k original miles, for $1500.

Anyone ever had one or know what to look for as far as issues go? We are headed out soon to go check it out and he asked me to come because i have 'car knowledge'. So since the interwebs has yielded very little about this caddy, i figured I'd ask other R3vers.

    thanks,
    Joe

Those older caddies have notorious ECU and electrical issues. Headgaskets too. Other than that really. Not too much to speak about. Those 4.1's are pretty reliable.

EDIT: And something about some engine seals..... Can't remember exactly what though.

It's not a v4/6/8 is it? Those things have a tendency to catch fire and burn to the ground. Other than that I think the issues are electrical. Make sure everything works. My mom had one and the wipers had a tendency to stop working when you needed them most.

its a v6 i believe. Ill check all the electrical stuff, oil to make sure its not milky, and look for rust? The guy seems like and older gentleman and im guessing its a one or 2 owner car.

Those things are major fail. Just like pretty much all of the other domestic stuf during that time.

In addition to all the above mentioned problems they also suffer from a thousand vacuum leaks from the myriad of lines snaking everywhere.

                        Coupe DeVille - good
                        fwd platform - bad

Anything before the V8/6/4 abortion is cool. iirc, the best bet: circa '77 - '78 with optional 425ci engine.

Back around '84-'85 I used to drive my mom's old '77 Sedan DeVille in high school whenever my Fiat Spider was broken. The Caddy had become a spare family car and I used to bang on that thing brutally, and of course party hard in it too. So I've got a certain nostalgia for that era of Caddys. Plastic shit would fall off, but the hardware was indestructible.

I had one of those in 2000-01.

POS. 4100 series V8 = junk engine. FWD = shit transmission.

Traded it for a 94 Escort right before the transmission took a dump.

                          The best Caddys are pre-1981.
