    Canon Powershot S2 IS

I am looking at getting a camera with in a semi reasonable price range. The Powershot S2 IS looks like a pretty quality camera and I have had good luck with Canon in the past.

Do any of you guys have an opinion on this camera or another camera that is comparable?

    Thank you.

STOP. seriously. STOP and think for a sec. your about to buy a $400-$500 DSC and in about 6-8 months your ganna be fiending for a D-SLR like a crackhead. trust me, its soooooo worth it. save up some more money and get a Nikon D50 or a Canon XT if your so into canon. I bought a $400 Sony W1, then after about 300 of extra crappy lenses and filters and accesories I realized I should of saved up and bought a REAL camera from the start. so if you really want advice from some one who just went through what you did, i say wait a bit, save some $$$ and get a camera that you will trasure and love for a long, LONG time.

I understand what your are saying. I am actaully helping out my mom pick out a 21st birthday gift for me. I was searching around and I found some SLR "like" cameras (that was their description) but I have never heard of the companies. I want a quality camera that I can mess around with the settings and learn how to shoot. I am afraid anything more than that would go to waste.

Is the "cheaper" SLR's a ton better than the S2? Also, I am not neseccarily stuck on Canon. I am open to opinions.

P.S.- I saw the pictures that you took and the car show, and the quality looks unbelievebly professional.

      Thanks

i went through a similar process. i bought a sony V1, and after playing around with add on lenses the degrade image quality and not getting near the kind of results that a slr is capable of, especially in low light, i sprung and bought a d70. the v1 was pretty expensive when i got it but fortunately i was able to make enough money shooting realestate with it to buy the slr and i am so glad i did.

YES! You can get the Canon Digital Rebel XT for $900 or so, and my god is it a nice camera. It's got everything from full auto to full manual with more adjustments than you can shake a stick at, and the quality is just downright amazing.

word up. if your gonna listen to anyone listen to TJ. this guys middle name should me photo. I totally agree with TJ. even the entry model XT is a SWEEEEEEEEET camera. buy it and first start out shooting in full auto, then slowly as you learn more and more about the camera youll see how easy and rewarding pics can be with a SLR in full manual. good luck and have patience.

I bought a point and shoot a few years back but got totaly discouraged by the total lack of ajustability in settings (the min shutter was only 1 sec) But it was small. What do you want to use this for? Being in college its GREAT to have a tiny camer the size of a large cell phone. For parties and anything like that.
I did get sick of that for "real photography" and bought myself a digi rebel xt. Its a superb camera, and can do anything that I want it to. The ajustability of SLR's are almost limitless, and the quality of the pictures really show that. The only thing I dont quite like about mine is the kit lens is kinda cheap.
So I guess you have to know exactly what you want to use it for.

i think the lens that comes with the xt is a 18-55 mm. which is a bit poopy compared to the 18-70mm my d70s came with. i also didnt like the plasticky peal of the canon.

The kit lens works well enough, but you can just buy the camera body if you want and buy whatever 18-70mm lens you want. I've heard people complain about the feel of the Rebel XT but I had no complaints. It's an amazing camera, but yes, there are better cameras out there ($$).

My parents ended up getting me the Powershot S2. I am pleased with it so far. I am by no means a photographer and havent even used my camera since my trip to Cancun in mid October (400 pictures on my 1gig SD card). Here are a few pictures that I have online. Not too shabby.

Also, I like the image stabilization feature. It really helped taking low light pictures without a tripod.

i'm an XT shooter, you've seen my fisheye work and now my 18-55 work with the hitman photoshoot a few threads below. If you're gonna get a p&s from your mother, buy it at costco. trust me, you will not regret it. use the p&s for a year, and keep the receipt. costco has this ultimate return policy in which that if you have the original receipt, you can return it at ANY time for a full cash refund. 3 years ago i bought my first digi cam. a p&s. every year i returned it and "upgraded" mp's until may of 05. I then proceeded to buy a canon rebel xt which listed at about 1000 dollars. i only had to pay roughly 450 after returning my sony. Think about it, it's smart, and you know it.
