I'm not a fan of SMG either, but give some respect where it's due. Bashing BMW's incredible engineering department is just plain ignorant.
Dsg came out in 2003 and was the world's first dual clutch transmission in a series production car.

After driving a few SMGs on the road, I would chose a standard 6 speed over them any day. DSGs feel practical for daily driving, but everyone I know that has/had one has had to replace it.

I realize that, and SMG debuted in 1997 alongside Ferrari's F1 system. The sequential gear concept is the same but the execution is different, Volkswagen saw what BMW was doing and came up with a better system once technology had evolved to allow it. It's like saying the McLaren F1 sucks because the Veyron is much faster. Different era, different technology. Both were great achievements.

I've literally driven everything from SMG-II to E-Gear and F1, and I'd probably agree with you on the standard 6 speed. Some of the systems really aren't bad though, and on higher-end cars having to maneuver a heavy and awkward clutch pedal (like in the Murcielago) is not the most enjoyable experience. But as far as E46 M3's go I'll take 3 pedals any day.

Porsche was doing dual clutch on their race cars in the 80s, so the same thing can be said about given time to perfect it to bmw. I have only driven the SMG in an 05 m3 and an 08 m5, they are cool when driving fast but I sure couldn't get the hang of them trying to drive them normally. They were jerky and slow shifting and I felt like I was in the passenger seat to someone that was not very good at driving stick.
