Bought a plane ticket to Rio on a whim a couple months ago and now I am here for 5 weeks. Then I am headed to Argentina and Chile and then North to Peru. Has anybody backpacked South America before? Any tips or suggestions for a first timer?

Are you staying in Hostels? If not check some out its a good way to meet other travelers and find out the best places to go. I have Done Central America Twice for two months at a time each time and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I usually find people who want to do the same things as me and then travel with them for a couple days. I'm sure you heard of Lonelyplanet.com but if not check it out... Have fun
