Exactly, my first time to TJ I was 17. Me 2 buddies were on a 2 month surf trip in a 1973 vw bus. Shit got crazy in Tijuana, I'm not going to get into details. But, our stay in Tijuana ended with us getting chased by a big ass bouncer and a stripper down the main drag.

Seriously though check out out Coronado beach. La jolla is cool, lot of rich folks.

If you guys are younger and into bars and nightlife, I'd say PB or Mission Beach are probably good places to check out. Coronado is fun too, a lot more upscale, and probably the nicest beach in the area. There is a cool deck area at the Hotel Del Coronado where you can sit by fire pits, drink in hand, and watch sunsets and the ocean. Always a favorite of mine. La Jolla is good for upscale shopping, and the cove is pretty. In terms of daytime amusement, yeah Balboa is awesome, and you can also check out the zoo, Sea World, Wild Animal Park (a little further away), and of course there are lots of things to do downtown. Gaslamp is fun on occasion, but there are lots of douchey people there, so it has never been my favorite. If you get up to north county, Stone brewery is a must....real cool ambience there, and of course good beer and food. Carlsbad has nice beaches though it's about 40 mins north of town, as do Del Mar and Encinitas a little closer to the city. There are literally endless things to do there. We lived there for almost 2 years, and still didn't even come close to seeing all the things we wanted to see. It will be a fun time, especially if you are coming from the PNW in the winter-time. We are from OR, and it was strange living there, with it being sunny and 70 almost year around.

this thread wasn't yet moved into off topic when I posted that.

OP send me a PM when it gets closer to your trip. Depending on where you're staying and how much time you have and what might be happening in town, I can give you suggestions.

I know it's not actual San Diego, but oceanside has one of my favorite beaches to surf. I doubt you're into that sort of thing though.

Yeah, I lived in Oceanside, and I'd agree the beach is cool. They have a street fair on thurs nights which is fun, and it's cool to take a walk down the pier as well. I think I prefer the Carlsbad beach, but it seemed like most of the surfing took place in oceanside or nearby. If you are into surfing, there is a pretty cool spot about 80 miles offshore SD, where an underwater mountain creates pretty massive waves. They run day-trips out there on charter boats. I've not done it, but I've flown over it a lot and checked it out....looks pretty cool.
