LOL, A lot of people are actually like this! People try so hard to sound intelligent and that they know how their car works. BUT, they end up coming off as complete retards. It's so much easier for us if they let us do the diagnosing. People always come into my shop and tell me what needs to be fixed. I'd really like it if every customer was honest and was like, "I don't know shit about cars. fix it for me", my job would so much easier.

We had one woman tell us the carbs on her 2001 Audi were out of sync and/or needed to be cleaned. We were like, sure, bring it in.....

Did something similar to the Porsche dealer here. Called up, "I need a water pump for a 1989 911."

                "Uhh....okay...."

In background, "Hey, I can't find a WP for a '89 911 in the computer...." "Aren't those air cooled...?"

Back on phone, "Hey, uhh.....is that car air cooled?"

                Me, "Yeah, hahahahah!!!"

911's were aircooled until I believe 97. The bug jokes are obvious but no one catches the 911 jokes.

Yes, but it is the dealer. They, of all places, should know better. I know the guy who works there and he's been doing Porsches for years. Caught him off guard and got a good laugh at his expense. He does the same when he calls over here.

Yeah this one was funny in retrospect but I gotta' tell ya'... I really was ripping out my hair on this one.

The guy is just so damn good at delivering his lines it's hard not to believe him.

I might end up doing a whole series of the bad craziness surrounding the industry in the near future... But really I started this blog to unwind for my fucking job(s)... Kind of a catch all for my own bad craziness.

                            lol. Good one.

On the opposite end are stupid or cheat-ass mechanics.

Years ago i could figure out what the hell was wrong with my car. Took it to a shop and the guy told me that i needed a new clutch on my MR2 since it would kind of bog down some times. I was like wtf! Took the keys and hauled ass outta there. I ended up figuring out that is just a bad plug wire.

And thus the reason why i work on my own shit ever since.

I had faceplam the whole time. In my relatively short time working as a Mechanic, I have seen the same siht from customers. They think that withholding the truth will give me less to charge them for, but at $85/hr labor, nothing is further from the truth.

One guy came in saying that after we replaced the horn pad, it honks whenever he turns left. New ones are a bit more sensitive so we said we would check it out. Unable to recreate the problem on when we test drove, we sent him on his way. (3) days later, he comes back, same problem. This time we told him to drive while one of his went with him. Well, pulling out of the lot, he takes his right arm, hand at 12 o'clock, palm facing him, forearm against the horn pad, grabbing the wheel from the front to turn the wheel left....pushing the horn pad in the process. He realized what he was doing, and said nothing. We didn't either and told him to have a nice day.

I hear you on this one... Idiots are the rule, not the exception in this industry and it's only getting worse.

This is the only other article about the shop... Believe it or not... I was putting it mildly:
