I replaced the water pump in my m20 a couple days ago. The whole job cost me $65 and even though I had to take off the hood, radiator, distributor, fan/fanclutch, and timing belt cover, the whole job only took about 2.5 hours. No problem.
I am now trying to replace the accessory belt tensioner pulley in my friend's 2002 Dodge Neon. The bearings in these pulleys are notoriously bad and tend to explode, taking the pulley with them.
After ****ing around with it for an hour I had gotten nowhere, so I called my uncle (he's been a mechanic for the past 20 years) and asked what the heck I was doing wrong.
He said, "You have to remove the tensioner-arm to replace the pulley. It's actually part of the timing belt cover, so you have to take the whole thing off. Oh, everything is so close together that you'll have to remove all the engine mounts, so you can lift the engine 6 inches to get to the top bolts, and then lower the engine about the same distance to get the lower bolts."
Yep. I hate Dodge Neons now.
