I will 'third' the old H/K stuff. The old JBLs I have look to be similar size to your speakers. They are rated 75 watts but will accept a higher wattage if driven by a proper amp. Case in point, I was lucky enough to add this beastie (H/K Citation 16) to my collection recently:

It works the JBLs pretty good at 150W per side. If by some stray chance you find one of these for $40 dollars, leave with it immediately!

CL is your best bet to get a good deal and then garage sale in the summer.

Goodwill is also an option, but they don't normally have high end stuff and they are sometimes quite pricey too.

For $40 budget I think you can get a decent receiver. Yamaha natural sound is also pretty good. Look for craigslist deal in your area.

I'm also a vintage audio collector. Been doing this for few years now. I mix vintage and new tech though.

I still have casette player, 8 track and turntables. But I mix them with newer audio/video technologies. Best of both worlds.

Here's my current karaoke setup(CL/garage sale finds):

Harman Kardon 730 Twin Power receiver, Pioneer SG 540 EQ, Pioneer 9500 II amp and speakers are old school APM flat square woofer. They are all JDM... I only buy mostly Japan made vintage audio stuff. I love the polished look and green lights.

I have a few receiver, equa, amp and lots of speakers stored in the garage if you're closer I can give you one.

If you really need one right away I think it should do the trick. Check the output wattage. I think it can drive your marantz speakers but looking at the pics of your speakers you probably need a decent receiver to drive it properly.

it has 8 track player so it looks like an older model and I don't think it has good power. Make sure it has bass and treble controls for high/low.

              but for $10 it's cheap.

Dude..that H/K 730 is bad ass. I have had 2 Tandberg recievers, several open-reel decks including a Tandberg 7" (15 IPS on a 7" reel...about 30 minutes IIRC) deck with an Advent (yes, real Henry Kloss stuff) Dolby box...it had no circuit board, all point-to-point. At one point I had a Teac X10R with an outboard DBX box (223 IIRC). I miss my old Luxman PD264...I had the vacuum platter and air bearing tone arm with all Litz wire all the way to the Phono stage of my 1963 Fisher tube integrated amp...god I miss those days.

Most of that stuff was destroyed in a fire, so sad. Not even pictures. My next system was stolen, but that is another story.

really? I'm not kidding I bought that hk 730 for $5 at a local garage sale. I'm not very familiar with hk as I'm mostly pioneer, etc. I just thought green lights are cool.

you sounds like you have some serious stuff above. Most are jargons to me hahaha..

Oh, sorry...I have been hardcore since I was a little kid. I was the youngest member of the AES, joined when I was 12, in 1975. I never published anything, but I have loved this stuff since I was a child. Denon had invented PCM true digital recording in 1971, same pulse code modulation in use today, at least in CDs. I read about CD technology as early as 1980, when I was 17. I clearly remember talking of this "incredible future" where "there would be players that has no moving parts at all"...and everyone scoffed.

That 730 is a fine unit. Does it have the loops between the pre-amp and power amp sections on the rear (RCA jacks connected by a visible bridge)? If it does, you might want to consider bi-amping with an electronic crossover between that receiver and another 2 channel amp. The difference in sound quality can be shocking.

i have a similar speakerset up hooked up to my mac,
i have an RCA ipod/cd/radio/aux player that i wired to the speakers then ran an aux from my headphone cable to the audio in,
sure as hell beats mac's built in speakers!

Update: I sold my grandmas oldsmobile and got a nice commission :) so my budget has grown.

I'm browsing the Lawrence, KS Craigslist and there is a ton out there for $75(my new budget), but all this stereo Mumbo Jumbo is foreign to me. If any of you stereo savvy folks have time to kill and don't mind browsing Lawrence's Craigslist and pointing me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. In return I will send you an autograph that you can hold on to until I'm rich and famous and tell everyone, "I helped that guy get a stereo receiver!"

                          Thanks,
                          Joe

found an old school JCPenny stereo with a built in turn table, eight track, and cassette player at an antique mall for $35 today. The cassette player doesnt work, but the turn table is flawless. It all sounds great, and for $35 i couldnt beat it. I broke out all my vinyl and Ill be jammin all night!

                            Thanks everyone for your help/advice.

I honestly forgot about it, and didnt know much about it. It also seemed to be in kind of rough shape(more specifically the turn table). The one i bought has a flawless turn table, the sound is great, every record i've put on it sounds great! For $35 i am very happy, im enjoying it right now, and it gets very loud and sounds really great. Im sure i could have found something better, but my lack of patience got the best of me, and it was right in front of me calling my name for $35.

My step dad is upgrading from his practically new very high end Denon soon. So Im going to try and get that from him once he hooks up the new stereo he already bought. But in the mean time, im rockin out to my JCPenny!
