On Top Gear, the cars are in mph and they buy gas in gallons. I thought USA and some latin america countries were the only ones left using imperial measurements?

Imperial gallons are 1.2 US gallons if I recall correctly. Many of the prewar brittish cars I deal with use mph on the speedo. The Italian and French use kph.Comment

I don't know if the Brits use metric fasteners. After Whitworth and British Standard (and a couple of others), they switched to us. At least in my experience.Comment

Brits are like Canadians. Because of proximity and exposure to the other system (US imperial for Canada), (Mainland european metric for the Brits), both systems will largely be workable and intelligable to most people if it's a must.
If anything, Canada is more confusing as pretty much the only things that are wholly referred to in metric everday are travelling distances, speeds and maybe volume (litres). Everything else is pretty much imperial. Heights in ft/inches, real estate in sq ft, weight in pounds, land in acres. Construction trade is wholly imperial.
As an engineer it really places my trade at a disadvantage globally as I am not as comfortable as I should be if called to function in metric - ie with rest of the world.Comment

Fuck imperial units...METRIC for the simplicity and FTW!
Although, I must say some units in imperial are very used arround here.
i.e. US gallon, PSI or LBS. Other than that...Euro M3'87 NogaroSilver/Euro E34 M5 '93/Porsche 993 TT 97' Euro/Porsche 993 Carrera 95' Euro/Skyline R33 GT-R

They generally use decimals but sometimes they do vary between inches or mm. Some machine shops use decimals in terms of inches and some in mm. Like when your machinist tells you that you need to bore your cylinder .030 over. You know they are talking about 30 thousandths of an inch. Many tolerance data sheets Ive come across usually list both though.
