it had a rather limited selection, no uzel or novacat but did have madcats (of course), daishi, supernovas and the expansion pack added in, among others, elementals and atlases

4 had a huge selection comparably

customizing the mechs is fun but you don't really have the ability to load up an annihilator with 6 gauss rifles and 4 AC10s and blast everyone to bits. you have to balance weight, heat production, critical points...ammo is annoying. I tend to stick with extended range L lasers, pulse lasers, and PPCs...shit becomes easy enough anyway, just aim for the legs.

in 3 you also aimed with your mouse and had to steer around with the keyboard. I don't quite remember how 4 worked (it had been a long time) but IIRC it was pretty much all piloting with a keyboard
