AVG used to come out not so good in tests, but havent read any lately..
Avast is free, frequently updated and used to be one among top five in most tests ive seen.
May slow down your browser a bit if the computer is old..

Id go Avast if you dont wanna use Security Essentials, for some reason..

Been using AVG for years, gonna try out the Microsoft Security Essentials, see how I like it. It's got pretty good reviews all over the web.

Psch, anti-virus. Just build a dedicated pc for your..."shady" website visiting. If it gets infected just wipe it and restart.;)

And I'd just like to say, as a long-time Windows user.. Windows 7 is a really great OS.

It's usually my keyboard that gets the wiping.

There's no need for an antivirus on your Mac. There are no known virii in the wild for OSX.

The only use for an antivirus on a mac is to scrub files that PC users send us so we don't pass them on to other PC users. But there is currently no virus that can infect you personally.

Not sure how far this is true but there are definitely fewer mac viruses than PC ones. Ive been doing "shady" stuff online on my mac laptops for the past 2 years and have never had a single hiccup.

If by fewer you mean zero, none, not a single one, then yes there are "fewer" virii in the wild for OSX 10 and above. If you mean less than PC virii but more than zero, even a single one, then no that's incorrect.

The closest that someone will attempt to claim was an infection was Leap, which was a trojan. An anti-virus will not prevent a trojan and will do nothing against users clicking on things they should not click on and granting permissions to things they should not allow.

Are you implying that millions of Macs are silently infected but not one person, nor any organization, has taken credit for creating or detecting it? Sounds like a mighty sophisticated virus and quite atrocious if it has managed to do nothing for the past decade.

^I don't think he was talking about macs. And actually....it's really irresponsible to not be running an antivirus. When they get your CC or bank info, the rest of us pay for that. Don't be a slacker - just run a AV and be a good internet neighbor.
