OP answered as well on BF, but yeah will not be a problem. I've seen some of the cars people imported over there and believe me they were smoke machines and made it through.
Has anyone shipped a 24v e30 to Italy?

The SOFA (Status Of Forces Agreement) between the US and Italy allows Military to have cars registered in the Italian system, but through USAEUR and not the normal Italian registration process. the OP won't have a problem at all.

Yes and No: Only if you are doing a weight restricted tour or an non voluntary deployment or a short tour where you not authorized by right of rank structure.
The JFTR manual is very specific. I used to be a Logistics guy some time ago. Still try to keep up to date as it helps out when I'm doing things for my unit.
Ask Eric: Told him things his local TMO didn't want to hear.Comment

That only applies to USAF and Army the Marines and US Navy are not on weight restricted tours and can ship their cars without issue.
USAF and US Army can ship an auto if it's manufactured prior to 1 Jan 1974. It's in the SOFA agreement, but you can purchase one there at AAFES. I shipped my 73 Vw bus over that had a 2.5l 911 engine in it. Sold it shortly after getting there, bought a R32 Skyline, sold that bought a Cooper delivery wagon and a TZR 500, and bought and sold a few other over the 3 years I was there. I was at Misawa in the mid 90's.Comment
