I'm sure they'll still be accurate after being manhandled by the UPS man.

I work with a lot of special tools. I'd sell them to you in a heartbeat if the penalty for human trafficking wasn't so severe.

Yea they aren't that expensive even if you buy Fowler which will be accurate enough.

                Excellent post.

OP, what is your budget? Do you want digital or dial? Friction thimble on the mics? If you can afford it, I would buy a used pair of Mitutoyo, Starrett, Brown and Sharpe or Lufkin off of ebay. The old dark green Mitutoyos with the cursive logo that were still made in Japan are my favorites for micrometers and the newer (last 10 years) Mitutoyos are my favorite for calipers. Make sure both come with a case and that you get a standard and adjusting wrench with the micrometers.

EDIT: Also, I wanted to point out that verniers (very nears) and calipers are two totally different things.

                  Ummmm... No.
                  You have your:
                  1.) Vernier caliper
                  2.) Dial caliper
                  3.) Micrometer caliper
                  4.) Digital caliper

ALL calipers.... Just totally different styles.

Meh, I guess you're right. I just never hear them refered to as vernier calipers. Off topic, but who even uses verniers any more? I have a bunch of them, but the only pair I use are my Starrett 0-36" just because dial calipers in that size would be outrageously expensive.

I know I sure as hell don't. I had a crappy vernier for exhaust work in the past. I would imagine that it would pretty much be in places where the calibration could easily be altered, which would be a pretty hellish environment for any measuring tool.

What are you planning to use the mic and the caliper for? If its something where you don't need a super precise measurement or just around the house, go with a Harbor Freight or some other import brand.

If you plan to use these tools more than just once and have the money, I'd invest in some quality brands like Brown&Sharpe, Starrett, Mitutoyo, etc.

A good place to order tools that I like is MSC.

Edit: Just noticed that "BillBrasky" basically said the EXACT same thing as me. I fail.

enco is a good source for inspection equipment. I'm a machinist and use mostly mitutoyo tools.
