    Slammin's serious life thread.

So, I know I say a lot of dumb shit, but this is a for real, life changing thread.

I'm sofuckingtired of sitting at work on r3v all day looking up parts and getting hassled by people every day of my life. Doesn't feelgoodman.

Something I've always loved was architecture. So, I am now looking into going back to school (Since I'm 22 and still have my whole life ahead of me) and getting a degree in architecture.

My point of this thread is to gain insight as to what I am looking at as far as classes, etc. Pretty much, I suck at algebra, but excel at geometry. I've have experience in HS with CAD, although I would have to relearn everything since I haven't touched that stuff since 2007. I've worked construction a few Summers with my brother, done roofing, etc. Loved it, but don't want to break my back (I've seen what it does to my bro).

So, anyone here into architecture as a career? I'm really not looking at this with dollar signs in my eyes, but as something I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life.

Currently I'm sifting through this while at work:

I am not sure about architecture, but for engineers, we usually go through 4 semesters if not 5 of calculus. Good luck, seems like a very good life decision.

my dad retired 2 years ago and was registered in 6 states since the mid 70's. You are going to need to step up your algebra skills. He was one of the first classes to graduate from Arizona State University with an architecture degree, so he was doing it back in the draing boards and led pencils days. I am not sure how much of the math is taken care of with computer programs now though.

Architects suck! All they do is make sure doors open the right direction and things look aesthetically pleasing.

Lol...yup. It's you engineers who need to make sure it will stand up. Looks is everything broheim!

I'm mainly interested in what course paths people have taken to get their degree. I know I can power through the math stuff, but really am not looking forward to it, butttt....my brother is a foreman in New Mexico and the owner of the company is selling the company to my brother in the near future....so I do have an in for work.

I really thought you were like 48.

I hear it's a hard course - too many people want in to the programs at most schools, so they have some weeder classes to keep people out. That and if you go to work for a firm, you do really boring stuff for 10 years before anyone trusts you enough to start doing real work. It sounds really appealing from a creative/technical view - not so much in reality.

the field of architecture is on its ass. I have a degree in arch and i fly planes. 19/20 of the people I graduated with are NOT working in the field since there are no jobs. On top of that it is an EXTREMELY demanding degree, often times requiring 60+ hours per week on your architecture studio class alone. There are many times where I was awake 30+ hours straight to make deadlines. If this sounds like its for you, then go for it, but I would probably advise against it.
Now look, I am not evil. My loan officer said so.

My dad is an architect with his masters in architecture from Virginia Tech. He has designed and built residential homes, high rise NYC condo/apt building, business offices, and medical facilities. He has never in his life touched CAD and does everything by hand with a pencil and a drafting table. Yes it might take longer and he is a dying breed of architect, but the end result is always really great. Ive seen him do elevations on cocktail napkins that put some CAD work to shame. He is incredibly talented and has been very successful up until recent years. (Being a self employed architect in this economy is shit)

That being said, it is a great profession. He has Genuine passion for his work and the talent to match. I have asked him in the past about the math involved, and he has told me many times that school/architecture programs really blow it outta proportion. Yes there is math involved, but it is not completely overwhelming.

Slammin, if you'd like to see some of his work or have any questions you'd like me to ask him let me know. He has been building and designing for around 35 years and has really done some impressive work.

I'm thinking about taking classes for interior design in the academy of art university in SF. I've always been into architecture I just have been procrastinating for alway too long already. So like you were saying it's about time...

Even after all the expensive schooling there an apprenticeship system for becoming an architect. My dad recently hired a girl right out of UVA with a degree but she isn't close to becoming "licensed?" anytime soon.
