I did the same gig for a few years. You can get some pretty good deals on trade in cars if they don't want them. When I was 17 (2004) I was working at a Chevy dealership. Had been eying up a new car for a bit and they took a 02 SVT Focus in on trade. Fell in love with the car immediately and asked the sales manager what sort of price I could get on it. They sold it to me for $10500 which at the time, that year and mileage were selling for well over $16k still so I got it for a steal. Still my favorite car I've ever owned, sold it last October though.

take yourself and work seriously so others will do the same. I cannot stress this enough, when i have guys at my bike shop in the summer that work for me that dont put in the effort, or just view it as a 'easy job' I send em home as soon as i can.

If you take your job seriously and are respectful to your co-workers even if you dont see eye to eye it will play to your advantage. Also, I hope your not one of those justin bieber, emo, long nasty hair in your face types. As stated by others, be clean and take care of yourself. If you look like some punk ass kid you will not be treated with the same respect as your equal counterpart who has a decent hair cut and is clean shaven.

I was never a lot-tech or detailer but I was an inventory manager at one point. When I was on my way out the door there was a detailer which was responsible and did a good job which I was considering training for my position. They would have nearly doubled their pay and had a much better job. Along with the appearance/presentation items others have stated. Become buddies with the sales managers, service advisors and pretty much everyone above you. The mechanics are usually pretty cranky and busy so dont bother them much, especially dont bother them with questions about repairing your own car, they will get annoyed.

I absolutely loved working at a dealership. It was a very fun atmosphere and lots of fun to BS with the salesmen when they were sitting around doing nothing.

Everyone is telling you to take your job seriously, which I agree with, but I think the big thing is to recognize when its time to get work done and recognize those other times when you can screw around and BS with the managers/salesmen and get them on your side. You can certainly have a lot of fun and earn a lot of respect if you can differentiate between the two.

I foresee the biggest problem being near closing time on friday and saturday nights (especially month end when they are trying to get as many sales as possible to report for that month) . If the dealership closes at 9pm and at 8:45pm you find yourself with a lot more cars to clean up, remember to work hard, work fast, have a good attitude and expect that you are going to have to stay late sometimes when you dont want to (as late as the customers and salesmen are willing to stay afterwards, sometimes this is til 10pm). You can usually strike a deal with your manager to come in later the next day or another day to make up for it.

oh, and everyone has their eye on you when you are driving. Don't mess it up. The same guy I was going to pull into my manager position really screwed things up when I caught him coming back from a joyride in an S2000 with smoking brakes, clutch, and roughed up tires. That got him fired.

Kiss your higher-ups asses without being obvious. I've had pretty much every job in the service side of a dealer (greeter, driver, tech, service advisor, warranty administrator), and as long as your manager likes you, you can do just about anything.

I did that job in 1990 at a Chevy dealership- until the owner of all people, caught us smoking a bong in the back. It was a fun summer job- but it was a dead end/cool thing to do when I was 16-17. I even crashed an 86 T-bird trade in car into a brand new Geo metro that was just plated-- totaled out the Geo. learned alot hanging out with the oldskool painters in the body shop back then too.

Well, I would consider that job a customer service type job... so:

Always have a good attitude, especially when you're having a shitty day.

                            Smile.

                            Take pride in your work.

Don't ever be late. Ever. In fact, make it a point to be early all the time.

Consider yourself an "asset" to whomever you are working for. If you are doing things and doing them well, then you truly are. You will get more raises and more recognition.

Work hard and don't let your co-workers bring you down.
