I think James hit the nail on the head.

my E30 offers me the cheap(ish) thrills of road warriorisms, along with endless opportunities to tune/build it like a lego-castle as it's just that easy with these platforms.

yet, the harshness of the ride at times, and the attention I get is often unwanted.
I'm almost 33 years old with a 4 year old boy. When I see some punk 17 year old with a straightpipe'd beattoshit e30 bouncing off the fuelcuttoff in efforts to make me spool up and lay the smack down, well...just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

don't get me wrong...I'm never and I mean *ever* getting rid of my beloved E30. she's the keeper.

if space and time were of the essence, I'd be building a landyacht cruiser...one I can just ooze into and cruise softly down the freeway and mash the fast pedal in order to spool out a nice 20psi of classic bmw roar till my fears/morals/logic kick in....which is premature at best lately.

*edit...I suppose I want to start building a fast living room

I sometimes dabble with the idea of picking up some good ole' American muscle. Just love the rumble of a V8...but I don't think that I could buy a domestic car. So my compromise is a C63 AMG. Plenty of V8 rumble, with German build quality...and it's 4 door and auto, so it's practical as well.

I'll have another ej207 swapped GC someday, I'd say it was more fun to drive than my s52 swap was and no question that it was much more capable of a performer.

A well built civic with emphasis on high n/a power and a solid suspension is incredibly fun to drive.

I know the feeling; here's my other ride. Winter beater, parts hauler, tow car (8000 lbs capacity) and highway cruiser. Honestly, it can be just as much fun to cruise in comfort, and then I'll use the turbo 318 on the track and such. Plus, parts are cheap like you wouldn't believe, and the economy isn't thaaaaat bad for a big V8 haha.

Sometimes I get tired of driving my S50 car around. Its low, stiff as a board, and has a lot of power. Then I get in my Jeep.

I Love my e30 too, but sometimes I enjoy renting a big Impala or Caddy DTS and just cruising around town, and esp. on the highway.

Where I live, a manual tranny is very rare and annoying at times. So the e30 is a bit of a nuisance esp. in heavy traffic (thankfully I use my scooter mostly). A big, comfy, late model American car with at least a V6 and autotragic, usually has me feeling like a coddled newborn baby.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

I rode in the back seat of an Alpina B7 turbo E28 one time. Solid 500-550 lbs of humans in the car and that thing felt like it pulled 4th gear just as hard as 2nd gear. Very impressive. The E28 chassis has the mass and wheelbase to handle big HP and be civilized and comfortable at the same time. As a good friend of mine says, it's a Grown Man's Car.

I always wanted to build up a clean black EF with bronze rims.

Perhaps I've just grown up, but having a low harsh sports car on the public streets down not do it for me anymore. I adore racing E30's, and Pro3/Chump/Lemons is a GREAT outlet for that..

I still love my mtech, and cannot wait to pull it out of retirement for 2012 and put more miles on it.

My E28 525i and E34 M5 Touring are just more practical for every day use, they are comfortable, have heated seats, power everything, quiet, smooth, yadda yadda.

That being said I still want to build an Mtech-2 320iS replica, and eventually get a 325iX Touring.. however with racing I'll probably just burn all my money on that :D
Talk with FredK he built one then proceeded to disassemble it and sell it off.

We are in process of deciding to S38 an e23 or just add simple turbo which would be far more economical and cheaper on wallet at fuel pump.

I've wanted to pick up another car too. Only problem is that I want to many different setups ha. I've thought about another e30, either an ix or a sedan. Get it super clean inside and out, wheels, slightest drop, done. I'd kill to have a raul welt 964 widebody, I know it will never happen. For now it's a 1992 Mazda b2200 manual 4 cylinder, beat up and is as fast as a geo metro on a good day.
