    Highest MPG <$2000 car

I'm going to be going to a different school in the fall and all except 1 are vey far away from civilization and my friends. The commute to my girl's college would be 130miles every weekend and it would be about 210miles to get back home. I'd rather take my E30 off insurance and leave it for when I come back home for break or what not to use it. Anyway I'd love to have a really high MPG car. Like >40mpg. But I'm not going to spend a lot of money, <$2000 is my goal, and reliabilty has to be a strong suit. Diesel or petrol I don't really care. The only worthy candidates I've found are
CRX HF-Impossible to find it seems(probably cause they're all totalled)- but those who have them claim >60mpg
<1990's Volkswagen Diesels. Not sure how reliable these cars are.

This is just a feeler but depending on which school I go to I'm going to need to consider it.

Right now I daily a 98 Toyota Corolla. It's a souless little box but I'm averaging around 40-45 mpg.

Plus I've put around 80,000 miles on it on two years and have yet to repair anything major (knock in wood)

Civic VX, or CX. But if you like both mirrors, VX. Not sure on the HF getting 60+ but I know Vx's are 40++.

Go with the metro, 94 model xfi, if you can find one. The engines are bulletproof as long as you keep oil in them and you will get some where around 50 mpg if the car is in decent tune.

                    I had a 94 metro.

Its very uncomfortable with long trips but is best for around town. i did exceed 50 mpg on a perfect flat trip.

what you want is the suzuki swift, the 1.3 liter verson, or the metro lxi 4 cylinder.
why you want that is the cpu and wiring harness is the same as the 1.3 hp motor they never sold in the us. its the same as suzukis superbike the hayubasha

that thing flys. its still a little peice of tin but when it has 100 hp its corvette fast.

I think everyone got them all

diesel rabbit is probably the actual winner especially for highway only miles. the geo metro beats it around town.

Theres diesel metros people made that get 100 mpg.

The old 92 and older 1.6 diesel in VW's is incredibly simple and dead reliable. I've had several with 250-300k with NO major repairs and they still ran like new.

Fuel economy commonly in the 50's. I pushed one to get 60-70 mpg. It was hard to do though.

The downside is that they are very slow. If you can find one with the turbo on it that helps a lot.

I used to drive my old metro from texas to colorado without complaint. You can expect about 30mpg out of the 1.6 sohc swift engine not sure about the GTi models though I never owned one. The best to find would be a sprint turbo still has the 1.3l but its turbo'd and will spank a stock e30. Plus its a sleeper and still gets 45 mpg :)

This is going to be a useful thread when I boost my sedan and need a car in the downtime.

VW diesels are incredible. New and old. The engine are very reliable but make sure the timing belt is done at the right time. My parents both drive jetta tdi's and average above 45mpg. The sedan gets close to 700 miles from full to empty and the wagon gets about 650 on a tank. Parts are relatively cheap and they are pretty easy to work on. I would have to say go with a VW, plus you can make them look good in the process. Make sure you find one that waas decently taken care of or learn to fix diesel engines because if you need a mechanic, they are super pricey. Good luck finding something and pm me if you have anymore diesel questions, thats what I am really big in to.
