You said mileage sooo...my sister has/had an '02 Honda Civic, 1.7(?) AT. On the round trip between NY & NC a few years ago, with an avg speed of 60-65mph, we got 40mpg on the way down(90mph thru LI/NY/NJ @ 3am), and 42mpg on the way back up. Any faster than that and we'd have been pegged for speeding(NY plates) and my numbnut sister brought a 12" bong along but failed to break the news till we were in NJ.-03/2005 E46 330D Touring 6spd(204hp/410nM) Sapphire Black/Naturbraun Sport...300k KM & 35mpg(mixed)

Good guys there, and tons of info for the swift, sprint, metro, barina and firefly ( all sister models)Originally posted by Spaz! View Post
Originally posted by hfabricius View PostVW diesels are incredible. New and old. The engine are very reliable but make sure the timing belt is done at the right time. My parents both drive jetta tdi's and average above 45mpg. The sedan gets close to 700 miles from full to empty and the wagon gets about 650 on a tank. Parts are relatively cheap and they are pretty easy to work on. I would have to say go with a VW, plus you can make them look good in the process. Make sure you find one that waas decently taken care of or learn to fix diesel engines because if you need a mechanic, they are super pricey. Good luck finding something and pm me if you have anymore diesel questions, thats what I am really big in to.

Originally posted by stamar View Posttheres a fiesta, then a festiva, then the aspire.
those are all 1.3 liters
they all lose the battle with the metro for gas mileage, and they have less interior room ( being shorter and wider.)
However especially the fiesta is much more reliable as its made by mazda. The festiva is designed by mazda, but made by kia. And the aspire is just straight kia crap.
in eurasia those cars were called the mazda 2.
Those are all under 1000$ in perfect condition lol.
A real pimpin metro is the old convertible.
only in 3 cylinder though.
the geo storm isuzu impulse is definitely sporty but it doesnt get to 40...
there is also the old school hyundai accent it got 40 mpg.

You already put a lot into your 24v e30. Put some of that 2k into your e30 for any needed maintenance and you will be getting great gas milage and have a reliable car.

I'd look into an older diesel benz, or a mk1 diesel rabbit. Although I haven't had any experience, I've heard nothing but good things. I've actually seen some mk3 turbo diesels, but they're decently rare and people ask for far more than 2k for them.
What about a 524td? If you can find one.
