The smallest subcompact in 2012 is about the size of an E28 which was a large car for its time. With side airbags and gizmos everywhere, new cars don't have the awesome visibility of let's say an E30. On top of that they are quieter and quieter. No 40 year old mom is going to see your ass in your Ducati Hayabusa 1600RR when she's trying to merge to the other lane on the highway without checking her blind spots. Motorcycles are plain dangerous, period.
I thought about getting a motorcycle but the weather in Georgia is so unpredictable, I would spend more time in my car. Other drivers awareness was my big selling point too. The difference in visibility between my Cherokee and my dad wagon is ridiculous. Definitely go mk1 diesel, rabbit or golf.

Swap the diff, lose the chick.

anything powered by the m10 you should see 30+ but reliable, nah. Most of them have been run to shit. More reliable than the m42 though.

What about a 524td? If you can find one.
a diesel benz ? what? your e30 gets better gas mileage than a diesel benz.

25 mpg on the highway. 60 hp. yes thats right. all the way up to 100 hp in a 85 td

get a um.... any 4 cylinder car ever made before one of those things.

my 77 240d benz got 24mpg at best.... benz doesn't make the best economic diesel.

I actually hate those things. But I spend so much time ranting on this forum i just took a chill pill.

Those things suck. They get lousy gas mileage. Worse than even seems possible. Thats all thats relevant.
I can remember hitting 0-60 in 3 minutes with one and getting seasick.

they use a very very high maintenance kind of diesel engine that will coat everything with soot. including the interior and you.

What people DO like those peices of crap for is converting to vegetable oil. until they realize the thing breaks down every 1k miles and they sell it non running. Theres the beginning and the end of that story.

They are very durable and resistant to rust. There i said something nice.

I bought a hail damaged 04 Jetta TDI from a fiend for $1700. Perfect car for what I use it for -- don't care about the body at all and have averaged (all fill-ups put together) just north of 45mpg since I've had it.
Don't forget that you will pay more for diesel.
