My favorites are the guys with an armory in their basement, ostensibly to fight hostile government forces when martial law is declared....
Never mind said government can obliterate them from miles away without ever offering a target....
I can think of a number of ways this existence could, at any moment, end. Dylan said "it could all snap apart at any moment, like putting scissors to a string".
Yosemite Supervolcano eruption and asteroid impact are the most likely. Yosemite is 40,000 years overdue and the result of its eruption would be beyond catastrophic for everyone in the US.
Modern Americans, for the most part, have little idea of how fast city life could get really ugly if things like electricity and water were unavailable for only a week.Comment

That's why I figure having a few months worth of food and water is plenty. If any reasonable amount of service hasn't been restored by then...............I'm not sure I care about trying to live in the stone age.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

Ive got a preppie/prepper buddy here at work. His saying is, "If you have food and I have bullets, then I have food."
If I was going to prep for civilization failure (which it will not), I wouldnt do silos, fortified ranches, any of that crap. I wouldnt want to be on land at all actually. I'd learn to sail, fish and the ways of the ocean, and prepare a very well equiped, good sized sailboat that could carry my family, and then some. And I'd live and work no more than 20 miles away from where it docks.Comment

Did you guys see that there have been quite a few earthquakes on our coastline, even today.
Power was out for 20,000 in Tigard today, and along the coast people are without power.

Its not his motto. I may have not conveyed that correctly. He's already got the several years food supply, generators, diesel car, learning all the survival skills, plus whatever other etc preppers do... His point by saying that is you must be able to protect your prep, with firepower. Because other will take what you have.
But I think that if it comes down to it, he would do whats necessary to feed his family.Comment

If civilisation would end, it would be because of
a) global nuclear war -- no survivors except those in bunkers, and those people can't come out in the next hundred years so that bunker becomes a tomb.
If u have a boat, u won't be able to get there. If u are already on a boat, u are not far enough in the sea. Radioactive fish makes u glow in the dark.
b) volcanos blow up -- yellowstone is about to pop ( in earth-years it is ), meaning mountains crumble and mountains rise fast. Huge floods follow. That bunker becomes a fishtank with u in it. Sky goes dark with ash. Temperature on earth drops rapidly. Everything dies on top. How much water did u have?
c) zombie apocalypse -- realisticly? not likely. zombies are dead people. Dead meat lasts what? 2 weeks? Heat and cold will rip right trough that. Hole up in an appartement building's penthouse for a few weeks. Then steal ferrari's from your local dead zombie dealer.
d) Global epidemic with some strange disease u can't see coming. Think aids but on steroids. Good luck shooting that.
chances of survival : not good. Unless U got a spaceship the size of the enterprise in that barn...Comment
