Hey r3v - what other careers might I be suited for?

I've never really considered venturing outside of healthcare - but I'm looking for a job in a different city (Portland, OR) and would switch industries if it was a good fit.

Anyways, here's a summary of my skills and experience:

• Currently a non-clinical manager responsible for 35+ direct reports at the busiest level one trauma center (ER) in the US.
• Vast knowlege of insurance billing and coding, revenue cycle management, lean operating principles, EMTALA, HIPAA, etc
• Analyst level excel skills
• Excellent management skills
• Quantifiable history of improving patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction and efficiency while reducing controllable expenses.
• My ER is in the 99th percentile in terms of customer service.
• I also have revenue recovery and call center management experience.
• Still working on my degree - but I'm not in a hurry and really don't see the point.

Basically I'm great with data and have experience effectively managing up to 100 employees. I have no idea what other industries I'd be suited for. I've worked for this company since I was 20 and haven't really looked elsewhere. I'm looking to move to Portland, OR and want to keep my salary in the 50-70k range. I'd take less - but no less than 45k.

I'm still looking for a position in my field but healthcare in OR is nothing like it is in TX.

Any suggestions?

Well if you are a excel guru the sky is your limit. We just employeed a excel guru in the civil engineering world. All he dose is make spread sheets for estimations, expenses, links to other programes.

If you do that, for that little, you live in the wrong country. I estimate in business up here you would be north of $100k easily.

if there is a Hajolka in the town your going to, you could do very well as a Profit center manager. they have a profit sharing set up that could make you very wealthy with the right business planning.

Sounds like you would be good in the banking industry, but you would want to consider San Francisco, Charlotte or NYC instead of Portland. I'm not even sure what the main industries in Portland are.

Id say no matter what get your degree. The company I work at doesnt even look at anybody with out a BS. Your opportunities will be better especially if you work for "the man."

If you have a lot of time invested in your field and know your product, maybe sales?

On a more serious note, having successful management experience is a pretty big deal to a lot of companies. It implies that you work very well with people, are organized, are a team player, and can take stress well. With a good resume (and a degree) you could land any number of management jobs. The degree is a pretty important bit though. Yes, you can find companies that will hire without a degree, but often companies will pass people over if they don't have anything at all. Not saying its right, just kinda the way it is. What are you working towards a degree in? Also, what are you really interested in? That will really determine where you will work well-people who enjoy their jobs invariably do better at them.
