I just mapped Freeride's plan- 859miles 18 hours 27 minutes of travel time.
Although those small coastal towns are beautiful, they aren't necessary in my opinion. I'd stick to the three major areas of interest- San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and explore them to their fullest extent. Although Highway 5 isn't that scenic it is very convenient.
With the three major destinations being SF, LA, SD-travel time would be 495 miles, 8 hours 26 minutes. Personally I'd spend a few days in each location having the time to see everything they offer- rather than trying to rush to 15 different places along the coastal highway.

I spent $550 in gas from Chicago to LA. I was driving a 2001 Toyota Tacoma with a camper shell and a whole lot of cargo. full tank would last me about 250-280 miles. motel 6's were $44.99-$55.99. the journey cross counrty is sooooooooooo worth it. especially if you take the colorado route. theres nothing to see if you take the southern route.PSN ID: Yourself1

This thread is now about my california vacation last week of July. I'm going with my friend, we're both 18 years old and we're going to be there from Thursday to Monday.
If there had to be ONE PLACE in California to visit, where would it be? We're kind of looking to party (aka alcohol), perhaps go to some 18+ clubs or whatever, just a place where an 18 year old can have fun in the night, we'll sightsee in the daytime. We don't mind traveling, we're going to have to take trains everywhere since we're not bringing a car, we're flying. So tell me r3v, what do you recommend!Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+

Bay area since it has a way better public transportation system than socal. You can go everywhere in the bay area with any of our abundant modes of public transportation (BART, Muni, Samtrans, Amtrak, Caltrain, and many more)with ease and on the cheap. Theres lots of 18+ events on weekends, I'll ask my younger friends about the weekend youll be going and PM you.

I think, yosemite kings canyon and sequoia
I would definitely skip san diego completely. The highlight of san diego might be going to mexico.
I would see the redwood forest, the entire coast....
Id spend a lot more time in the bay area than LA.
But I would go see disneyland.
I tihnk in july in general though you are going to want to be by the ocean.
