It was $750 and gets almost 40 mpg. My commute is 40 miles each way and I was leasing a Crown Victoria. It's actually not a bad car. It's slow as fuck, but it handles relatively well.

Me too. I'm tempted to get one over a 4runner/tacoma. I can't decide.

i can compare, as i rented a 4runner when i went on vacation a few months ago.

i would not take the legacy off-roading, as i did with the 4runner down in borrego springs. the toyota was very fun for playing rally-driver, and handled emergency lane-changes better than i expected an SUV to.

the subaru is, however, a very good (and quick, if you get the GT) sports sedan that is probably very capable at handling inclement weather.

the 2.5 turbo in the legacy GT is a detuned STi engine, and i personally have no idea why all the subie guys are knocking the marque for retaining it, as if it's "old". get anywhere near half-throttle and it moves right out. floor it and you are at extra-legal speed in a hurry, on the street or freeway.

if you want a compromise, maybe outback XT? i'd probably feel a little more comfortable dirt-hooning one of those; but i bought this thing because i wanted a comfortable commute car.
