Gaming laptops

Ive been thinking about getting a new laptop for gaming and work. Seems like every sub 500$ laptop I have or have had, has had problems.
I don't know much about gaming laptops other than I want to be able to run games like mass effect 3 and bf3. I have a 360 and ps3 but am wanting something portable for trips and to be reliable.

I was looking into alienware m11x and the asus 74sx. Anyone have any suggestions?

but in my experience, i wouldn't buy a gaming laptop. buy a desktop. Gaming laptops tend to overheat easily. Also, Laptops normally are not able to be upgraded, like installing a new graphics processor or motherboard. You have to buy a whole new rig. With desktops, you can easily replace one component to keep your hardware up to date (saving you even more money)

Every sub $500 laptop has worked great for me.

But I have a dedicated desktop for everything. Laptops for gaming are really a last resort because you can build a decent gaming computer that will blow that very laptop out of the water, AND buy a cheap laptop for that budget.

But to each their own.

Just because you're going to college does not mean you NEED to have the laptop be the gaming computer...

Build a much better desktop rig, and get a cheap laptop. It's just better.

I understand that but that is not the question at hand. What would be a better option for a gaming laptop in your opinion then?

ya i was gonna say, overpriced for whats inside.

But don't be turned off bringing a desktop to college. I brought mine my second year after i realized bringing a laptop to class distracts you more than anything.

I only use my laptop to play LoL. my desktop is almost 4 years old and handles games much better than my new(er) laptop

Don't go alianware they charge a fortune for nothing to special really. As said laptops really are not ideal for gaming no matter what people say. But if you need the portability then maybe something like this.

Honestly, to play BF3 on a laptop, you're going to be spending over $1100. In which case, you're just better off getting a Sager.

Then the asus with 16gb of ram maybe something to consider. While for most people 16gb is a waste there are more and more technical programs written in 64bit taking advantage of as much ram as you have avalible.

What kind of engineering? Solidworks and Autocad Inventor are both very heavily GPU oriented for the modeling and assembly, and raw computational processing power oriented especially when testing parts.

There really is no replacement for a desktop in that field. Period.

Those and some more I believe. It sounds like I may need to do alot more research its just I know so little about computer and what their specs mean. Thus why I created a thread like this.

That is it. If anything running stuff like this is going to shorten the life of a laptop because of how hot they actually get at statained full load.
