To be honest Im not sure as of now 100% but it will be on the level of Autocad inventor and some of the more involved programs.

What kind of engineering? Because Both inventor and solidworks are a LOT more involved than I think you recognize.

Mechanical engineering, my thought was to have something small for the dorms.

No question. You will not want to bother with a laptop for that.

                Cheap laptop. Big Rig.

I would even build your own. It really is not hard even if you know squat. Just post what you are going to buy before you buy it. We can check compatability and then all you got to do is put it together.

And you really can not fuck up putting it together. It is idiot proof.

I'm going to second this. It's a VERY good skill to have, and is priceless knowledge.

Super easy. The only things you really NEED to know about the actual assembling your own desktop is to stay grounded to the desktop and surroundings, avoid static, don't work on it with power, and NEVER try to force things in.

But before that, it's just making sure that everything matches. Which is easy peasy.

                      I had an Asus G60, G73, and an Alienware M17x R3.

I highly recommend a used M17x R3. 5+ hour battery life, gobs of power, and sexy as fuck.
