i rent in an area that has a HOA. Im building a 80 rabbit into a race car and have an even bigger project tucked behind it in the garage. None of my crap ever leaves the confines of the garage and the President of the HOA is a pretty cool guy and Ive always been honest with him. He says as long as I dont burn down the place and am respectful of other people (NOT working on it later than 9pm) he wont give me shit. Ive always hated HOAs, I guess I lucked out so far

Up here if you are in an apartment style condo and not a semi detached townhome style condo, the attached garage is actually classed as "limited common property" so you cannot due shit in there.
Looks like your laws are different and you are well within your rights to do what your doing, just keep it clean and sand on.

I Hate my HOA I have gotten 4 notices about working on my car in the garage. Their rules do state that you cannot be seen or heard doing work in your garage. They really didn't like when I sprayed bombed my 83 rabbit haha. Never had to pay a fine I always say I'm going to JAG with the complaint. Then when I bought my E30 it wasn't running had a busted oil pan and some wiring issues. I fixed everything but it was running so rich it wouldn't run so I had it idling and testing some stuff for around 10 mins with the door open. Again another notice so I had to call and raised hell about it and the lady didnt know their own rules and regs. She just told me to pay someone else to do it haha... and I wasn't allowed to do any repair work in the garage. HOA (HITLERS OF AMERICA)

I'd confront them with what you're doing. Sanding is one thing, painting is another. They probablly think you are painting in there which would most likely be prohibited.

Whoever posted "what happens in your own home is your own business"... It's a great ideal but not true. There are many restrictions on parties, automotive work, running a business out of your home, my HOA wanted the landlord to evict me for my MMJ crops the neighbors complained about...my dads the landlord! Hahaha owned.
