              Bastard.
Don't need to be a network admin to do that. Most any cubicle job isn't working you to your full potential.

In any given week last summer, I only did about 2 hours of real work.

Cubicles suck. Its all about picking up and going from office to office. Makes it much easy to get away. And they can't keep track of you.

Us IT people are cheap insurance for big companies.

If our company goes down for 10 minutes, they lose enough money to pay for my years salary.

I know, I'm the guy they come to if that actually happens.

However I fail to see the value in having an IT Support staff that sits around all day waiting for problems.

My techs are constantly finding ways to do things better, and training to get higher in the company.

I'm not a slave driver, but I expect at least 85% of the time being spent at the office specced as "productive".

You have a good point as well.

Keep security at the top of your list. But you can never predict the future. Not sure how many other citys got hit, but about 8 months ago, 5 big companys (that I know of) in Phoenix got hit bad with some shit (don't recall what it was), we were one of them, along with Wells Fargo, BoA, and two others.

Anyway, one day everybodys routers went down, process levels pinned at 100%. Made it hard to figure out what was causing the problem, but we got it in no time once we figured out which branches were causing all this. We are ready when the shit your least expecting comes. It will happen to everyone, some day, some how, whether you like it or not.

Oh you don't have to preach security to me, thats for sure.

When I took over as IT Manager I redesigned every square inch of the network, including all points of entry.

Reliability went through the roof, as well as security.
