Current plan goes like this. Remember Im a noob

    X------------X------------X------------X------------X
    X------------X------------X------------X------------X
    X------------X------------X------------X------------X
    X-ground--X-ground--X-ground--X-ground--X

That is a view from the side. Each column of "X"s is a 4X4X5. 36 inches above the ground, the other 24 underground.

The side will be paneled with 2X12X8's. They will be screwed in stacked on top of eachother into the 4X4 posts.

Inside I will run rails on all 4 sides out of 2X2X8's. On top of these rails I can place more 2X12's or whatever for the "floor" of my flowerbed

The end will be constructed in the same manner, 2X12's cut to length and screwed on, stacked 3 high

    Feedback?

So far total price is $750 for the 4X4's, 12X2's and 2X2's... all pressure treated

Cad pics! First one is a side shot of what I am thinking. Second one shows the inner rails to support whatever type of wood I end up using for the flowerbed.

I like the design, but I think you will find it to be very boring and bulky looking once its made of wood and actually in front of you. Maybe finish the fascia with some wood slats at a 45deg angle to the horizontal of the box, it would add a much more finished look to it.

I am a contractor for a living of the last 13 years. If you want to talk about what stuff to buy I can help you price everything out and pick the best suited lumber and screws for the job.

Thanks man. My buddy is in construction too and worked at the local hardware store he is helping me along

I know that I need everything pressure treated, and the base pylons should be 4X4's

I figured 2X12s would make the sides easy to construct, but cutting them at a 45 degree angle is a good idea that I like!

Also for the record here, we get maybe 3 inches of snow and the ground definitely doesnt freeze, haha

2x12? that would be over kill, you can do 2x8 perfectly for that job.

                        Alright. I chose 2X12 originally because 36/3=12

Mocking up 45 degree angle version

It is completely up to you on how you wish to build it. The reason I am mentioning 2x8 is that 2x12s get REALLY bowed in the center from the curing they undergo. I highly suggest a less wide board to avoid that. Plus 2x12 are expensive. In new construction I stay away from 2x12 rafters or beams and go with 2x8 in 3s with plywood and glue/screws to make a beam. With rafters it is 2x8 or 10 depending on the span.

But with what you're doing it is more for a look that is pleasing to the eye. So a bowed board is not going to allow that. Thus a less wide board, you can still gain the 45 angle cuts on a 2x8. I do them on 3x.5 molding trim for corners. Even 1/4 round etc

I am using 55 degree angling I believe, which means cut the boards to 42 inches in length with the angle

What do you mean by 3x.5?

How would you lay the floor in? I put some rails around the edges and figured I can cut the 2x8s or whatever to length and screw them in

How bout 3/4 ply for sides and then sheath it with 1x6 at 45 deg. definitely a valid point about the 12's bowing.

3/4 ply with 1x6's over it?

I can 3/4 ply the insides!
