    speed kills part 2

A picture is worth a thousand words.

The Honda rider was traveling at such a "very high speed", his reactiontimewas not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. Swedish Police estimateaspeed of ~250 KM/h (155 mph) before the bike hit the slow moving carside-onat an intersection. At that speed, they predicted that the rider'sreaction time (once the vehicle came into view) wasn't sufficient enough for him toeven apply the brakes. The car had two passengers and the bike rider wasfound INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over fromthe force of impact and landed 10 feet from where the collision tookplace.

All three involved (two in car and rider) were killed instantly. Thisgraphic demonstration was placed at the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair by theSwedish Police and Road Safety Department. The sign above the display alsonoted that the rider had only recently obtained his license.

At 250 KM (155 mph) the operator is traveling at 227 feet per second. With
normal reaction time to SEE-DECIDE-REACT of 1.6 seconds the aboveoperator would have traveled over 363 feet while making a decision on whatactions to take. In this incident the Swedish police indicate that noactions were taken.

Rider found in the car? Sure. Surely he would have be pwned by the B pillar, probably into a few pieces? That a pillar looks like it got the jaws of life too.

Yeah, it looks to me like the cycle rider would have been thrown OVER the car, not into it, but that's what the write-up said.

Exactly, could never have said it better.

there was an accident like that just outside of my apartment about 8 months ago - speed wasn't that fast probably like 80-90 ish mph - but he t-boned a honda accord right where the door meets the front fender on the passenger side. The rider flew like 150 feet before he landed and lost a leg. This kind of shit is sensless - fortunately in the accident that i was no one died. That picture just makes me sick - but its a reminder for the rest of us.

Yikes! Pretty gruesome example of why you should keep it on the track. Nevertheless, I have still never seen or heard about a single death where "speed" was the root cause...
