    Subaru people, I need help

I know you Subie people are sort of weird but maybe you can help me out.

My girlfriend's brother owns a 2001 Outback which has an apparently dying transmission (so says the mechanic he took it to). I know very little (read: nothing) about Subarus, but I was asked my opinion on the subject of how to remedy the situation

After a brief and confusing look around there doesn't seem to be much available in the way of used transmissions for these things, and what is there seems way overpriced. So does anyone have experience with this? Is it worth it?

From what I can tell trannies from 01-04 are all compatible, as long as it's an outback.

    Oh and it's a 5 speed.

those 2.5l transmissions are actually pretty easy to find. you can nearly bolt any 2.5l 5 speed transmission and have it run fine (including impreza, forester, legacy)

The 2.5l are easier to find than say a 2002 WRX Impreza turbo 5 speed. Either way, they are complete shit (read: COMPLETE shit) and it'll only break again. And yes, that is the going price for them. A decent, low mileage transmission will run around $1,000-$2,000. OR, he goes all out and gets everything for an STI 6 speed swap which will only come in around $4,000.
      Need a part? PM me.

subaru guy here, see how much one from a CO dismantler is. Pretty sure it'd be cheaper.

All 5spd transmissions are interchangeable, shouldn't be too expensive.

All as in all 2.5l transmission right? Because there's a couple 99's and earlier for sale around here but I don't think they'll work.

really? ours has 170k on it and is working just fine with the original clutch.

what the hell are people doing to these cars? it's a slow-as-balls station wagon. it has less guts than a stock M20. if I have the family in the car I have to downshift just to go the speed limit when I go uphill.

It's the WRX's, all you have to do is delete the cats, turn the boost up and tune it and you will have around 240whp instead of the stock 180whp. You can do this for around $300.

it sounded to me like he was saying all 2.5 manual transmissions are junk, regardless if it's in a WRX or a legacy/outback?

They are all junk to start with but then you people adding even more power to them and blowing them all up and that is why they cost so much. I don't think that the transmissions breaking in the non turbo cars is as common though.

FWIW I blew up my center diff on my 95 5spd Manwagon, but that was due to years of snow hooning, autox, HPDE, and rallyx. The transmission itself is still fine.

My theory is that people buy these cars and expect that they can dump the clutch and be OK. Turns out that no, mechanical things will break when shock loaded, as if that's a surprise to anyone over the age of 3. If you break a Subaru transmission, you've been driving like a retard.

Case in point: buddy has a 400wtq 2600lb GC 2.5L swap on the original 5spd transmission, and has raced said drivetrain and engine for five years or so. Trans is still going strong, but crucially, he doesn't drop the clutch or powershift or anything that takes the retard cake.

I dropped the clutch hard for years in my ix without problems. :p

in the subaru.. it wouldn't even be worth the effort.

I've tried. Just made the clutch smell.... 100whp/tq at sea level sucks enough, but not as much as 65whp/tq at altitude does.

Cannot wait for E85 H6T. That'll be a rocket of understeering power.
