The only reason I'd ever want to join the navy is if Canada had nuclear powered vessel's, would definitely be a challenging and rewarding trade.
Maybe someone can provide some clarification on this for me. I've heard that in the US you guys pick a branch and then they decide the trade's they'll offer/place you in based on aptitude and performance, is this true? Here we go to the recruiter and are supposed to make 3 trade choices, and you'll likely be offered one and enlist based on that. I told them I was only interested in my current trade and they had an offer for me within a week.Comment

You don't have to join a navy to travel the world. What is stopping you?Comment

Yeah I didn't put all of the reasons why I want to join, but it is something I have to think about very clearly, I know it's not gonna be an easy task it takes hard work and I'm willing to do that and serve for my country.I know a know a few people in the Canadian military (none in the navy though), and they all seem to enjoy what they do, so much so that I've recently been thinking about enlisting myself after I'm done university. I don't see wanting to travel and see new things as a very good reason to enlist, typically people join due to family ties, the feeling of patriotism, wanting to help defend their country, wanting to blow shit up. so I hope that you've thought it through a bit more than that!IG: @_j.wnComment

I second that, but it's not easy. The Navy offers some of the best technical training in the world. It's worth the extra two years (6 year vs 4 year commitment) to learn a skill. Advancement and pay is better in the technical fields. I went through the Navy Nuke Program. I was paid E-3 pay from enlistment date until automatic advancement to E-4 after completion of electronics A School. Many Navy Nukes make E-6 before their 6th year.sigpic

I'm airforce as a machinist and welder, airforce is treated the best outta all branches, if you get stationed on a army base you actually get a differential pay because there living standards are low than ours.
But with that said Right now with the DoD cuts, any branch of military isn't the best idea. We're using lathes and mills from the 60s in my shop and have gone 3 weeks without welding gas before just because there was no cash

I did 8,5 years in the Army.
I will say one thing. If you do join the miitary, think long and hard about what job/trade you want to do.
I wasted 8 years of my life being a tracked vehicle missle launcher crewmember........................... It did nothing for me later in life (I was 18 and thought blowing stuff up would be cool) My brother on the otherhand (due to talking to me) joined and went into the communication field, now gets paid very well working for motorola.Comment
