Yeah I was thinking about the i7-4790K. It'll all be determined once I actually decide to order stuff. Then I'll know an exact budget. I'm still thinking of dropping the GTX970 for something a little cheaper. I can always upgrade later on.

Look up the programs you'll be using and see which video cards they support for whatever GPU acceleration they have. It's been so long since I've bought a video card that I don't know what the market looks like any more. I still have a GTX 260 216 SC for goodness sakes.

When I get my tax return I'm getting a 960 I won't spend more than 200ish on a gpu since you need to upgrade them pretty often if u want to stay playing games on ultra settings in the future

My 660 still got 50fps in bf4 on ultra with my old phenom processor.

If you get a high end card, it will last at least 3-4 years before being obsolete.

I'm on my 3rd year of my 650ti but I guess I mean to keep up with the higher resolutions and still stay playing ultra with high fps. my card right now keeps most stuff on highest setting at 50ish fps buy I'm only playing on a 1366x768 monitor...

Ok question time, I am considering a getting a Asus G751JT or G750JM here in the next couple of months (pricing is only a couple of hundred difference) as my laptop is on its last legs. I am looking in this direction as I want a desktop replacement so I can run Lightroom or PS stitching large files together, running autocad, and maybe some light gaming here and there. And of course must have a 17.3" 1080p display.

Am I missing something else that would suit my needs for substantially less money or am I just buying into marketing ??

I would just get the best Asus ROG series laptop you can build or afford 17.3 and can be built to be a desktop killer. If you can get the 980m gpu for it

Any ideas to refine this list or replace unnecessary parts? I'd really love to keep the i5-4960k and GTX970 but I'm up for any recommendations.

Get an optical drive. They're sub $20. No reason not to. You can install windows from a usb easily though if that's the only reason you're looking to get one.

I'd change the case to a fractal r4, but that's all personal preference.

Yeah I'd probably add one just to be on the safe side. As for a case, I really like the one I picked but it's really just a place holder to give an idea for budgeting.

I think I will aim for the i7 because I won't be taking a hit on gaming performance, duh, but I'll be gaining performance on workstation related items. As for graphics, I think I'll drop down to something more around the $200 range. It'll still be plenty, plenty fast enough for me.

I'm just looking forward to actually being able to play all the god damn games in my Steam Library...

                          Well I just installed a

ASUS Xonar Essence ST Sound Card
                          Billion 7800VDOX Router
                          TP-Link T8E AC1750 wireless adapter

Got the sound card to go with my Bose head phone and what a difference it makes the sound is so much more crisp and smooth, probably going to link it up with a tube amp down the track.

The Billion adapter is so I can run my own VPN server down the track after I get access to Australia's new Fiber to the Property in october.

The wireless adapter is so I can relocate the PC with out having to move the router. Only issue I did not realize "which is stupid on my half" is the wireless adapter supports 802.11ac but the router only supports 802.11n. Dose not matter at the moment but once I upgrade to the FTTP then I will probably flip the router on ebay and upgrade to a router that supports 802.11ac

Here's what I did, prices are significantly cheaper vs when I built mine a few months ago. So this is still a sub $1100 build. Keep in mind I did change the case to the fractal r4.

Everything works perfectly. Windows 7 installed from a usb.

The case you have selected looks nice. I'm just not big on the whole "gaming" case look. Minimalist >
The fractal also has very nice cable management/routing options.

I used to, haven't touched it much lately. Yeah I'm not sure if I want to mess with liquid cooling at the moment, definitely at a later date.

I don't like the crazy looking ones either. I wouldn't want any silly lights or anything, just all black. The thing I really like about the one I picked is the usb and audio ports on the top/front area.

I felt the same about liquid cooling, but honestly glad I went with it. Very efficient and a breeze to install.

The fractal has top mounted usb's (3.0 too) and I've become a big fan of them. I had a couple guys try and talk me out of it because they get filled with dust/etc but I'm glad I went with it.
