Do some research and hit up some CL ads, or some Pawn shops, and this might sound dumb but some outrageous deals can be found at a yard sale if you have some insight.

        I'm pretty stuck at 250
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

The Mexican-made Fender (not Squier) basses are a pretty good deal. I've had a Mexi-precision bass for 20 years and it has been very reliable. Easy to play, decent sound and takes abuse. It isn't as nice as my Rick, but it is fairly light and is a great place for someone to start. There are probably plenty of them on Craiglist or in pawn shops for $300-400. Having said all that, go to music shops and play a few different basses to see how they feel. If you don't like how it feels, then playing will not be as fun.

I've got a Schecter 004 diamond one piece. The solid body/neck and the dual active emg+hz pickups give this bass such a one-off sound that I haven't heard from anything else. Picked it up for something like $900 new back in like 2002/3 or something like that. I was in HS at the time, about 5'6", and had a punk/ska band. This was my axe. It probably needs to be restrung and a new 9v batt, but it still works.

I've also got a thick cord.. and 10w crate bass amp if you need those too ;)

The whole bass is actually smooth as glass (reflective) so what you are seeing is my cottage cheese ceiling reflecting in the back of the bass. Its got a small chip on the edge from storage.

It's seen 2 gigs and about a years worth of garage practice. Then a closet since 2004ish. $300 + s/h and ill throw in the amp and cord.
