RTV for the waterpump and thermo housing has to cure :(

You should not be using rtv on the water pump. The paper gasket alone is more than sufficient. If you prep the surfaces well it won't leak. Using rtv here creates a weakness and opens you up to leaks.

Haven't done a thermostat housing so I can't comment there but the last one I pulled from a (running) parts car had no rtv on it and it didn't leak.

mating surfaces are clean as can be.
but ive always used RTV on water mating surfaces because i dont particularly trust the paper gasket.
but i have hardly any experience working on cars.
                          any other opinions?

Oh and +1 to not using RTV, I didn't on either of those spots and haven't had any issues.
