              Because they don't care.

And with just about any typical modern car since the late 90s, all you really have to do is change the oil/brakes, don't run them out of coolant and put new tires on every 50k miles.

My '98 Z34 Monte Carlo I got rid of a few years ago, 170k on the clock (I'd had it since 80k), used a half-gallon of coolant every oil change, was on the original spark plugs and still ran strong, while leaking enough oil to add 1-2 qts between oil changes.

Modern cars just don't require that level of care because consumers have demanded it.

i'm sorry but that is some BS.
we have a 95 jimmy pick up with 260k on it, it doesn't burn that much oil or go through coolant like that, and we did a little more than "general maintenance" for all it's life. still runs and drives like a champ.
if you were doing the dismal maintenance on time and such then there were other things that needed to be taken care of if it ended up like that.

probably had a minor over temping issue which damaged the piston rings and or valve stem seals which then caused it to burn oil like a pissed off BP employee.

and that would explain the evaporation of coolant.

Because a car is an appliance to 98% of the population and it's job is to merely get them from A to B with no regard for excitement or fun. Just a tool. People only care when it breaks and they find out their oil is black sludge and they realize a brake pad exists.

No. The ludicrously common GM lower intake manifold gasket failure explains it.

Ummm IIRC the 98s were the last year for the LQ1 (3.4 DOHC), they are a little more maintenance heavy than that 4.3 in your jimmy. I am really surprised the T belt had not given up the ghost on that thing.

I'm pretty sure 97 was the last year, they ran the 3.8 in 98.

Was it. I never can remember I know it was either 97 or 98, my bro is a LQ1 aficionado though, he loves those things. They take well too boost too
