I'm looking for a reasonably priced wedding photographer in the Portland OR area. I was wondering if anybody had recently hired a wedding photographer, and had any tips/tricks/recommendations?
Yeah totally agree with that. My best friend got married this last spring, I could not attend. I did see the Video and Photos form the highly over paid "professional" while I am just a hobbies that does mostly wild life and landscapes, I could have had done a 100% better job with a canon Elf

Make sure whoever you hire has had experience in a fast paced, one-shot deal type of shooting environment. I have a lot of experience in different situations, and one shot deal type of photos, but nothing like a wedding. They are not easy to shoot, but not necessarily hard. And as stated by the sleeve, just because they have a 5d mkIV or what ever $$$ camera and charge big $$$, does NOT mean that you are going to get a quality shoot from them. Be real particular, and make sure you spell out (literally) what you expect from them and a rough price that you both agree upon. Though keep in mind, just because you agree upon something doesn't mean it's going to stay that price. If important key photos don't turn out, they have to spend more time editing, printing cost more than expected and ect; then the price will be subject to change. Don't be scared to be blunt and upfront, you (hopefully) only get one chance to capture this moment/day. Good luck!
Hey R3v.
So I'm getting really worn down on looking for wedding photographers. It seems that most people are really vague with prices and details. A few "contacts" from friends have not panned out so far. I have gotten to the point that I am stuck in a rut. For those who have recently booked a wedding photographer, do you have any booking advice for me?
As for a photographer, your choice and research is vital given the circumstances. As others said, for the photographer these are one time moments they have to catch. You can't "re-do" your wedding because the guy you hired left his lens cap on by accident. My buddy is a great photographer, mostly shoots automotive (even for big sites like S/W, Stance Nation, Speed Hunters, etc.), has a 5D Mark II with tons of glass, transformer tripods, basically everything a person could want or need but he REFUSES to do weddings. He's turned down quite a few offers- even those at four figures, because it's simply far too stressful and basically a life or death situation for them.
I'd research, try and focus on photographers with wedding experience, review their work, hammer out the financial details and variables of their compensation, and hope for the best. It's literally in their hands at that point, you need to be confident in your decision.
As for pricing, it has to vary based on the amount of people, atmosphere, how long they spend shooting, how long they spend editing, cost of materials (prints, etc.) I'm sure with details discussed they will be able to provide you with a more concrete price.
I wish you luck with the planning, and of course with your future spouse. When's the date btw?
one idea my sister did was to get the new polaroid cameras with alot of film and just have them on the dinner tables for people to take pictures with. then you throw them in a bucket or what ever and look at the drunkeness the next day. Also have pens so people can write on them before putting in bucket. It was crazy.
about a photographer IDK, I like candid pictures not setup shit which was annoying the shit out of me, it was for the sis though.
It's not always the camera you have but how you use it.
