ive thought of the sv650 before. The yzf600 is another consideration. I have plenty of time before its warm enough to do anything on a bike. Ill definitely be buying the toppest quality safety gear. Northern Va (DC metro) is possibly the worst place to ride, much less to learn. I'll just be doing the early morning weekend rides and possibly late nights in the summer.
That has got to be the best riding tip ;) I'd ride without a helmet before I go gloveless
this doesn't really make sense but
but anyway there have been some good suggestions here. The sv650 is def. a good choice as would any of the non supersport 600's unless you get an older one.
good luck, always nice to see another 2 wheeler on the road
Think about it, you take a spill with no helmet, and your melon is smashed. You're pretty much DOA, no real concerns about quality of life when you're dead.
However, if you go pavement surfing at a low speed with no gloves and don't die, there's a good chance that your hands will pretty much be fucked beyond belief. Now, you'll still be alive, but with two stumps.
actually the sv650s is a pretty nice agressive bike. toss on gixxer suspension and its gravy.
if i were you i'd buy a bike now. that's what I did, picked up another r6. 01 with 14k for $2250!!!!!!!
noones riding, noone needs their bike, so they're willing to sell cheap. i've bought 3 bikes at the end of the season or in winter, and got a great deal.
two years ago in march I picked up a 99 r6, 10k, 520 chain conversion, vortex sprockets, jetted carbs, m4 full exhaust, graves fairingstay, daytona steering damper, frame sliders and bar end sliders, fiberglass bodywork, and more for $3500
when I first started riding I picked up a 94 ninja for $900, sold it a year later for $2800

this is great advice but I'm only 18 and I dont have any of the required licenses. In VA you need to take a MSF course to get the permit if your under 19 (which i am). I would think that it would be a stupid thing to buy a bike without first riding it. Please correct me if its a common thing to do.
Very good choice for Beginners/all around bike.My dads 99' SV650 has over 125,000 miles and the motor has never been touched (other then maintainece stuff), still on the stock rear shock, etc. He rides it year round w/ some knobby tires for snow and very often rides dirt roads, etc
For the $$ you just CANT beat the SV650's
I have a bunch of friends who are hardcore bikers, and they're trying to get me into it as well. They ALWAYS reccomend the SV650. A very cheap, and light bike. I also live with a guy who is into bikes and he said i should get an SV650 as well.

good tip on when to buy bikes. I just sold my old '01 r6 this past march (beginning of riding season) for $6000 and all it had was a Yosh pipe on it (only 9000 miles and no scratches).

You can get your melon smashed taking a spill at 25mph, but I guess any gear is better than no gear
