What motorcycle for a new rider?

I'm thinking about buying a bike come spring time. I've never ridden on the street and am just a little sheepish about it, but it seems like waaayy too much fun for a small amount of cash compared to a car. I want something sporty and light while being fairly easy to ride and have enought power to move out of the way of assholes in SUVs. Anyone have some input? BTW, definitely want a used bike. $3-4K maybe more if its worth it.

    'Busa, don't be a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles.

Be sure to finance 14k of it on a credit card that defaults to 26% interest.

get a cheap bike to start off with....

a kawasaki ninja 250 is a good choice.. not too flashy, but it def has enough power to get up and move, while still safe for a new rider.

take some motorcycle control/safety courses, then when you're comfortable riding on the road, you can move up to something bigger (maybe something 500CC max)

its all about experience, and the thing that gets most new riders is too more power than they can control, just because of inexperience.

        thats just my .02

no. just learn on a slow bike. I learned on a 94 ninja. pretty slow. my friend learned on an interceptor 500. another good starter bike

you want a slow bike so its not as easy to get yourself into trouble. bikes are fast as hell.

I've already taken my MSF class, and will be getting a 99 Katana 750 as my starter bike. I didn't want anything more than a 600 as my first bike but it's a family friend who is selling it to me and i can't refuse the offer. I've riden both the katana 600 and 750...and the 750 feels like a totally different bike.

Helmet and Jacket are comming in the mail tomorrow!! Can't wait to buy the bike. Let me know what you end up getting.

I have a 1997 Honda CBR 600 F3 Its a good bike to start out with and bear with me im only 5'4" so if i can handle it you probably could too except my bike is lowered so i can compensate for my height.:(

Very good choice for Beginners/all around bike.My dads 99' SV650 has over 125,000 miles and the motor has never been touched (other then maintainece stuff), still on the stock rear shock, etc. He rides it year round w/ some knobby tires for snow and very often rides dirt roads, etc
For the $$ you just CANT beat the SV650's
