I buy tons of CDs, but usually check out new (to me) bands by downloading shows at dimeadozen.org. Lots of great stuff there that is legal since they are not copyrighted recordings and are not for sale. Trading them is OK, selling is illegal. If bands don't want their shows torrented, then the site doesn't allow torrents of those bands. For example, Hawkwind doesn't want people trading soundboard recordings, but audience recordings are OK. So, I have downloaded lots of shitty audience recordings of them from the early 70s and have purchased all of the live albums they have released from that period.
Shows that are recorded for live albums or tracks from shows used on live albums are not OK, even as audience recordings. So I have the rest of the show Iron Maiden recorded, but didn't release on Maiden Japan. All are torrents of flac files, so the sound quality is as good as the source. There are a wide variety of shows posted (orchestras, jazz, country, metal, rock, whatever), so always something new to check out, which is great for someone who likes new music.
Most of the time the artist doesn't need your money. The record company and staff likely do though.
This also greatly depends on the size of the artist. This is true for most big names, but a lot of smaller artists on independent labels could use the help. Also, with technology the way it is, quite a few bands are making the albums themselves and cutting the label out completely.

Used CD places, buy what I want and return it the following week for some more. $5 a cd and they give me half back it's cheap. Store it on a portable hard drive at work and others load their music on it as well. So it's shared.
Sounds like you need to start listening to some better artists.
I have a very wide range of taste and alot of it involves not well known bands and one off remixes. This all makes it harder to obtain. Thanks guys, I'm going to look into quite a few of these recommendations.
If it's individual songs, usually Amazon MP3 or Google searches usually turn up blogs or sites that are hosting them for download. Beyond that, usually torrents or ripping my own/borrowed from friends CD's.
I don't mind paying $.99 for the convenience of a 3-second download that I can use on 5 different devices with no effort. Especially since I'm then not stuck with several tracks that I don't like and/or will never listen to. What I have a problem with is paying $12-16 or more for something that cost less than $1 to manufacture, and that the artist themselves see less than $.60 of per copy. If you think artists are getting rich from album sales, you have no idea how the music industry works.
