There is a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal used in some injectible vaccines packaged in bulk. But thiomersal is NOT used in any vaccines given to children, including the intranasal flu vaccine. This is simply a non-issue.

Also, many nutters make th claim that thimerosal causes autism, but there is zero evidence to support that claim. There is an enormous amount of scientific research spanning 70 years that shows there is zero connection between thimerosal and austim. Check the CDC website for some references...I can't list them all here. You can listen to made-up stories by ex-pornstars like Jenny McCarthy, or to the unified voice of the entire scientific and biomedical communities.

There is zero thimerosal in individually packaged (single-use) vaccines or live-attenuated vaccines. In other words, there is absolutely NO mercury or mercury-based products in intranasal flu vaccine.

I see vacinating for things that can kill you, but the flu?
You must put a lot of thought into things before you come to a conclusion don't you?

Between 2 000 and 8 000 Canadians can die of influenza and its complications annually, depending on the severity of the season.

The study, co-authored by 9 members of the CDC Influenza Division, used an improved modeling approach which resulted in an estimated range of deaths from between 151,700 and 575,400 people who perished worldwide from 2009 H1N1 virus infection during the first year the virus circulated.

You weaken the herd by not helping us fight against it, and the only reason you're safe from it is because the majority around you receive the vaccine. Your welcome, moron.

Disclaimer:I am very suspicious of a vaccine that changes annually
Please don't post if all you're going to do is highlight your ignorance. Flu shots change because it's a virus, and viruses adapt.

Keep in mind, ground zero for H1N1 was just 50 miles from a Baxter plant in Mexico where someone contracted swine flu from asian pigs.
That is relevent to the effictiveness of the vaccine how? Great attempt at fear mongering, totally not a last resort of the desperate with no solid argument.

The yearly shot only immunizes you against certain strains, the ones the which the World Health Organization has deemed worthy. Don't blame a poor product for you getting sick. You likely were infected with a different strain or simply did not build up strong enough defences against the strain you contracted. The shots work, you got unlucky.

A new report finds that Andrew Wakefield, whose now discredited study first suggested a link between autism and vaccines, planned to leverage the findings for financial gain.

With a world full of gullible people who swallow whatever mass media publishes, they don't have the common sense to question Michele Bachmann claiming that HPV vaccine will cause mental retardation.

And then because idiots don't immunize their children, outbreaks occur:
The spreading of the anti-vaccine movement endangers more than just individuals. Read more on herd immunity and how fear of vaccines is harmful to everyone.

So you believe what? Some guy with a fraudulent study that wanted to profit from his self-created scare is to be trusted, rather than all the rest of modern medical science?

In the report published Tuesday, journalist Brian Deer reveals that Andrew Wakefield held a patent for “a ‘safer’ single measles shot.”

Meanwhile, Deer reports that Wakefield was in talks with investors to develop a business that “was to be launched off the back of the vaccine scare, diagnosing a purported — and still unsubstantiated — ‘new syndrome.’” A business plan for the venture indicates that by year three, diagnostic kits alone were anticipated to garner $43 million per year.

Among Wakefield’s business partners was the father of one of the children in the original study, Deer found.

The new information casts further doubt on the credibility of Wakefield who set off a worldwide vaccine scare with his 1998 study in the journal The Lancet which first suggested a link between autism and the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, vaccine.

Amid numerous questions about the study, The Lancet retracted Wakefield’s paper last year just months before his British medical license was stripped.
Deer reports this week that Wakefield was asked by his superiors at the University College London in 1999 to replicate his study using a larger sampling of 150 children after they expressed concerns about a “serious conflict of interest” given his business plans.

So choosing to believe Wakefield.... riiiiiight. Makes total sense.

Bahahaha, I fail to see how the common flu somehow became more deadly and is now killing people by the thousands. You know what will kill people by the millions though? Injecting avian flu right into their arm.

And drug companies could never fuck up this bad. By combining live h5n1(not easily transmitted) with h3n2(very transmittable seasonal flu) Baxter created a superflu that has a kill rate of 60%. They said they accidentally sent pure h5n1 when in fact they sent seasonal flu vaccines contaminated with live h5n1.
Based on requirements to work with h5n1, biosafety level 3, contamination is not virtually impossible. It IS impossible. But yet it happened. Draw your own conclusions.

I've been in the military for 2 years now... Before the military I had never had a flu shot and have never been sick. Flu shot are mandatory in the military and for the past 2 years I have gotten sick. Flu shots are completely unnecessary unless your super old and catching the flu will easily kill you

you could also get struck by lightning or hit by a bus. There's no way to prevent an accident from killing you, but there's a way to prevent a common disease from killing you. it's called a vaccine.

                      the flu doesn't kill? really?

people just don't realize how much more disease there was in the past, especially young kids on this forum, because they've grown up in a world where vaccines are common.

I'm a 3rd year pharmacy school student that happens to be an expert on this topic (recently had an exam on this in pharmacotherapy). The intanasal version of the influenza vaccine is a very novel idea. It's not meant to be better than the injectable or intradermal version, it's simply another dosage form. If you're deathly afraid of shots, get it. If you have kids that scream and kick and cry, get it.

Thank you previous posters for bringing up the studies that disprove most of the common misconseptions about vaccinations. Your child will not become autistic. You can not contract the swine flu from eating pork. As far as not getting a flu shot because you don't think it's a deadly disease... it's the 8th leading cause of death in the United States.

Furthermore, you will also will not get sick from getting a flu vaccination. The most you will get is a sore arm where you got the shot (if that) or an anaphylatic reaction if you're getting the shot and are allergic to eggs. But you will not get the flu from the flu vaccine. It is impossible. You're eather getting a live attenuated vaccine made from the virus which mimics the replication of it, or you get an inactivated vaccine which is also made from the virus but is made of various fractions of it. You can't get the flu from live attenuated version because it can not replicate in the temperature of the lower respiratory tract. The intranasal version is live attenuated. You can't get the flu from the inactivated version because, guess what, it's inactivated. Both of these activate B cells and T cells which produce antibodies that attack and destroy the antigen (from the vaccine). Once the antigens are destroyed, memory B and T cells are formed that give you immunity to that particular antigen and ones similiar to it. That's how the vaccine works. If you get sick, it's because you actually contracted the flu. It takes up to 2 weeks for the memory B and T cells to form, so if you come in contact with the flu virus before then you will get sick. This happens to some people and they think the flu shot made them sick, which simply isnt the case.

As far as making the flu vaccine... it does take a bit of guess work. It's what we in the know call "SWAG"... scientific wild ass guess. I kid I kid, it is based on where the flu strains start migrating from... usually in China where humans and birds have close association with each other on a daily basis (lots of antigenic shift and drift going on). So, they monitor what types of virus are occuring before the flu season hits and base it off those. The 2012-2013 influenza vaccine will contain these guys:

                        A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus
                        A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2)-like virus
                        B/Wisonsin/1/2010-like virus

There's 3 of them if you notice, and this is called a trivalent vaccine. This is what will be in most common flu vaccinations. However, FluMist (the intranasal one this thread is about) is a quatravalent vaccine and includes a second B type of the Victoria lineage. These were all approved by the FDA in February of this year.

So, get a damn flu shot! Get your kids vaccinated, your parents, and your grandparents. Shit can kill you! And if you're still not sure, got talk to your local pharmacist. They'll let you know what's up.

The complications associated with people who contract and cannot fight off influenza kills thousands every year in Canada alone, the so called "common flu". You fail to see because you fail to educate yourself, yet you seem quite eager to defend that ignorance.
