$199 tablets (kindle fire hd or google tablet)

I'm going to get my girlfriend a tablet for her to goof off on and maybe take to class. It'll be a Facebook, YouTube, game app, and maybe Netflix tablet. My dad has the fire and I'm not the biggest fan of its App Store but I do like amazons customer service. I know nothing about googles tablet.

Fill me in techies and consumers.

Is that relevant? If not get another one thats its main selling point to me.

another is actually reading books as thats what it is orignally, a book reader with high contrast display.

If neither of those are happening its a real slow tablet compatible with few apps. It does have facebook and email.

Just for the lifetime of free cellular internet it seems like a backup gadget youll never throw away. for years at least.

I have a moto, Xoom. Love the thing, use it all the time mostly for games and book reading, but it does see a fair bit of use for work related stuff too.

You might be able to find a new old stock one for a about 50 bucks more than what your planing on spending on. Off ebay or simialr. The 10" screen is way better than the 7" imo. I never did like the 7" tabs.

The kindle fire HD is pretty bomb. Dual band antenna means you get 30mb+ download speed over wifi. The display is at like 1280x800 on the 7in, and it has a dual core comparable to the tegra 3. IMO you would be better off with Amazon for their customer service, and if you get the 3g one the data plan is discounted. Plus get prime for 70$ a year and steam premium movies and shows to your tablet in 1080p.

I agree with this guy, Kindle fire is great! I got one for my mom the other day and she loves it. It's great for media consumption ie books, magazines, movies etc. from Amazon's market. However the nexus 7 is more of a 'laptop'. You can personalize it more and do a bunch of shit you wouldn't be able to do with Amazon's product. it has a faster processor, I think i read that the display is a little less superior than the kindle fire? But I might be wrong. The nexus doesn't have an hdmi port where the kindle does.

Personally, I vote Nexus 7.

Don't forget dolby surround on the kindle. Nexus has crappy speakers.. the kindle seems to last longer IMO, my Android products wear out fast compared to Amazon gimped Android.

Nexus. Its performance is better and it will only get better as Android is constantly updated and improved. Yeah the Amazon has better speakers but you are stuck in their market, no access to the Google Market. Just get the nexus and some headphones.

nexus 7 has a quad core....

kindle hd has 1280x800? cool.... so does nexus 7...

kindle fire DOES have: more storage (16/32 compared to 8/16), micro HDMI port, and dual band wireless (meaning you can upload and download on two separate streams)

battery life is nearly the same

nexus 7 also gets all new android updates immediately. kindle fire gets... nothing.

Honestly Android updates make devices worse allot of the time. Upgraded my tf101 to ICS and it committed suicide.

Mine's been just fine.
