Go with real late 90's to the very early 2000's. OBDII with the remodeled interior and the slightly upgraded 4.0.

With a little bit of money spent on tires and suspension, along with some self recovery equipment and you are golden. I dont even have the self recovery grear just yet but I havent been anywhere that has stopped my XJ from moving forward.
    My previous build (currently E30-less)

That is definitely an option. They have a few perks that might aid you in your travels, and it will be comfortable enough to sleep in, especially if you put a little time into it.

I am 6'3" and I can sleep in the back with rear seat folded down pretty comfortably. I dont live out of the thing but I could easily spend a week living and sleeping inside of it.

Plus they are usually a lot cheaper than what you listed as your spending price, so you can use the money on a winch and some decent rubber.

The interior is a little cold. That is why the Saab, and Volvo interiors appeal.

can someone tell me which XC90 to buy?
(but that makes me look like a yuppy soccer mom)

          Dammit.

^Saab is a little classier and its pretty much a Trailblazer ss. And I don't now if there's every been a performance V8 with better reliability and lower maintenance cost than those made by GM. Solid mpg's too.

I know that just saying that shit that says Saab on the box is more $$$$ to buy to fix. and there are Saab specific parts on that thing. Las t I checked the SS trailblazers only got the 5.3 not the 6.2. I could be wrong though on the last of the breed, as I have not kept up with those horrible things. For the money and the economy and all the way around might as well have spent a little more form New till now for the Tahoe/Yukon.

I'm with Sleeve. Fuck Saabs. They haven't manufactured parts for at least two years, and no dealers can get shit anymore. Basically SAAB said hey, you wanna keep servicing our cars, give us $100k. Pretty much everyone said fuck yourself and ditched them.

Both cars definitely got LS2's (6.0). There's no way there are specific parts apart from the trailblazer ss aside from the body. Lets not forget they were made by GM. The tail lights from a buick rainer, olds bravada and saab 9-7 are interchangeable!!! Its the same exact car re-bodied. Did anyone do it more than GM?

I want it to be comfortable
body style from 97-2001 is the one i have they have a metal rear hatch where the early ones were fiberglass, they have a better designed interior and electronics, the best your going to want to get is the limited they had the overhead console with outside temp, compass, mpg ect also they came with power heated seats wood trim ect. you can also add all these things to a reg cherokee i have a sport and i added heated mirrors, over head console, power seats ect everything is pre wired in cherokees so its pretty cool, in 2000 they added a different intake and head with coil on plug they made 40hp over the reg 4.0. there is a know issue with 2000-01 heads cracking but it pretty much if you over heat them my g/f's have no problems like that, you could be safe and just for with the 97-99 with the distributor motor, and like one of the other people said about blowing up axles, if your not beating the shit out of it and running giant tires then you will never break anything very very solid track, pm if you have anymore questions
