I just sold off my e46 325xit. 2002 model year. Had it from 2003 and put 100,000 miles on it as a daily.

It was a good car with the typical e46 issues of broken rear springs, tstat and reservoir issues, and ccv. Other than that, and the cv joints and boots eating themselves every two years, it was good. Interior is bullet proof compared to e36.

I'm not sure if I would buy an xi BMW . There is something nice and straight forward about rwd. (less parts)

DO NOT BUY A EARLY E46
the rear subframe tears from the mounts and is extrmely expensive to repair.
if you do get a early one make sure that there is proof that it was repaired.
i had a 200 328ci, best dd i have ever had bought it with the subframe fixed.

          go late like 2004

            2004+ had 6 speed.

And it only cost $200 to reinforce the sub-frame yourself, not really that big of problem.

I would go with the last year the ZHP package was available.

Facelift models are what you want. Beats having the subframe issues of the pre-facelift models.

Facelift. 2003+ for sedans. 2004+ for coupes. Zhp was may of 2003+. This was also when the engine management was upgraded from ms43 to ms45.

Get a 330. 325s aren't worth giving the time of day. No xi either. Straight rwd.

Funny you mention that, mine is a 2002 but it is a facelift 4dr...must have been an early stock of the facelift models.

I second the 330i comment, the 325i feels like a pig, ask me how I know?
