    Entering the job market

I figured I would see what you guys thought and if you could provide any insight into the entry level job market.

I decided to stay at school for an extra semester and will be graduating in about a week. Mechanical Engineer with Aero minor. I have been working an internship since july but doubt it will turn into a full position, plus there are 2 other interns hired on at the same time as me.

I just had an interview for one of the best fire protection companies in the business. They specialize in all aspects of planning, designing and implementing fire sprinkler systems in commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. The company has multiple offices around the state and nation and part of an international firm, but this office is small, about 4 project managers, a designer, manager and few other support staff. They also contract some work out. It seems like a great opportunity and a serious company. After talking with them they aspire to be the best and stay the best in the industry and get the job done right.

I am waiting to hear back at this moment, I would say a job offer is probably about 50/50 chance right now. They hire within and advancement opportunities are there. This position opened after the previous employee received a promotion with relocation. It is a hands on position with a steep learning curve. I would have my own office and start working on a project right away with regulations, code, etc to follow with the support of the other project managers. There are opportunities for pay raises after 6 months, benefits after 90 days, vacation, sick days, and about 50/50 field and desk work within a relaxed working environment. Also there are opportunities for a raise after certain certifications.

I went through a recruiting firm and they charge 9% of the annual salary as a fee. However I feel the salary is somewhat low. The contract holds me for the first 100 days but is really focused on finding the right candidate for the position, as it is a direct hire position. I have been contemplating this and am unsure whether I would take the position if it were offered to me.

My main question is about industry and how you knew/ know you are in the right one. Should I seize an opportunity like this even if its not exactly what I planned on doing, or the pay I would like? I guess I am mainly concerned with other opportunities that could come up in a different industry or with better pay after I had signed with one company.

At this point I am leaning toward taking it if offered, based on my work experience, the team at the office and the opportunity, but I just wanted to see what other people thought that had been through it before and their experiences.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Hmmm.Mech engineer with aero you say? Have you heard about this place ? http://www.google.com/#hl=en&tbo=d&o...w=1024&bih=455

Whats right for you? Are you happy where you live and can make it on the salary offered less the fee? Any other stuff you need to do this job like a state license and who pays for it if its needed? How long would you stay at that job until you bolted for something else? Could you go back for a masters if you needed or wanted to while on that salary?
btw,be careful of the defense sector right now,Its a little flaky and has lots of competiton at least in Aerospace.Very fun to work in tho'

i am a junior in mechanical engineering right now and I feel like were in similar positions. I am deciding whether or not to take a co-op position i was offered. Like you I am not sure it is exactly what I want to do, and the pay is less then what I had hoped, especially because many of their good benefits are dependent on taking a full time job after I graduate.
Anyways good luck making a decision. I can feel the pressure you are under right now to make a decision especially as the decision you make now has such an effect on the rest of your career as an engineer. It is hard to pass up an opportunity like that when you get it when it isn't exactly what you REALLY want to do. Keep us posted on how it goes!!
