Rather a 1602 or an early Tii. 510 were cool when Bob Sharp did them 35 years ago, but the fact most are now a washing machine vs a car these days. I'll just look for a barn find 02.
I need a 510 in my life

The racers used an "expanded" 2.5L I-6 that won the 1972 Trans-Am championship for under-2.5L so hard, they cancelled the series. Then, they basically embarrassed all the 2002's and everyone else in B Sedan racing for a couple years, especially with the help of Bob Sharp and Peter Brock. The 2002's are great road cars, but not exactly terrifying race cars. But I guess since this is a road car discussion, that's a pretty important distinction.Last edited by ELVA164; 12-18-2012, 05:29 PM.Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one? Really? I would have sworn that they used a 1.8 or 2.0L inline 4.The racers used an "expanded" 2.5L I-6 that won the 1972 Trans-Am championship for under-2.5L so hard, they cancelled the series. Yeah, I always thought 510's used a 4 cylinder L motor.
Wouldn't changing from a 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder make it ineligible for most types of racing since that chassis was never sold with an I6? I know nothing about the Trans Am series though.Comment

^ The road version of the car always had a 4 cyl. He's saying that a racing version had a 2.5L 6 cyl.sigpicComment

You're right, the Trans Am car used a modified 1.8L inline 4. It produced about 150bhp, but in conjunction with special Nissan-provided parts like fiberglass body panels and a close-ratio 5-speed transmission the cars were extremely potent, even in the larger 2.5L class.
I got confused because it became a fairly common option to swap in the 240Z inline 6 for 510 race cars. My bad :(Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one? Info, photos, videos, and more can be found at www.michaelsvintageracing.com!

Mmmm I'm a huge Datsun nut. I was after a 510 in all honesty, but the E30 fit the bill pretty well and they are much easier to find/cheaper.
I like the 610's and even the 810's because they are like pseudo-Skylines.Different strokes for different folks.Comment

My dad bought an orange 510 new a couple months before i was born, the first new car he had ever bought. I grew up riding on the trans tunnel between the bucket seats cause i didn't want to sit in the back and that car is prob the main reason i got into 2002/1600 bmws.
Out of all the cars my pops owned i would like to have the 510 the most.Comment
