The racers used an "expanded" 2.5L I-6 that won the 1972 Trans-Am championship for under-2.5L so hard, they cancelled the series. Then, they basically embarrassed all the 2002's and everyone else in B Sedan racing for a couple years, especially with the help of Bob Sharp and Peter Brock. The 2002's are great road cars, but not exactly terrifying race cars. But I guess since this is a road car discussion, that's a pretty important distinction.

Rather a 1602 or an early Tii. 510 were cool when Bob Sharp did them 35 years ago, but the fact most are now a washing machine vs a car these days. I'll just look for a barn find 02.

Good choices. Personally, it'd be a RX4 coupe or Colt Galant GTO.

The 510's really are cool cars, and in my opinion a bit superior to the 2002 (although I loved the crap out of my 2002). Not as nice-looking though, in my opinion. They look much better stripped down for racing than in road trim. They're getting pretty hard to find now, too, unfortunately. Make sure to get the 2.5L!

When i was looking for a daily my choices were Datsun 510 or E30. My dad had one when I was a kid and I have always wanted one. I ended up with E30 and I love it. someday maybe I'll find a 510 to build with my pops

I really love 510s, they are the e30 style of the import side. I love their boxy lines and rounded edges. Loved the video, thanks for posting it.
