Oh, you might read this as well. http://jalopnik.com/5969713/the-103+...&post=55410115

Since it pertains to the subject at hand.

I'll say the 510 is the best handling of the group. I had a '69 Alfa GTV and it had nothing against a similar set up 510. It wasn't even close.

The Datsun's were lighter due to the thinner gauge steel used (cheaper). I enjoy watching the GTV, 510, and 2002's all go at it in vintage racing. The 510 guys often spend ALOT more money on their setups as compared to the 2002's (which is a good reason why they're often faster).

The whole story about Datsun "borrowing or heavily influenced by" the suspension from BMW is true. Leif Anderberg recounted the story of Datsun purchasing (and then shipping) two 1600's from the Vasek Polak BMW dealer in Los Angeles in early 1967. Its a shame he died this last year before his stories could be recorded.

My dream garage would be one of each.

The BRE 510 that won the '71 and '72 U2.5L Trans Am series was a 1.8L 4 cyl L-18 motor. The Alfa was a 2L. The '70 SCCA championship was won by BRE with the 240Z running an L24 (but they qualified with the roadsters, and up till the final laps the roadsters were winning until they both had axle failures handing the win over to John Morton in the Z.) This is absolutely worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5XAP4pCRps. It is the story of BRE's win with the 510

I'd love a 510 done in the Newman (as in Paul Newman)/Sharp racing colors like this It would go nicely along side my BRE influenced 2L roadster.

My dad bought an orange 510 new a couple months before i was born, the first new car he had ever bought. I grew up riding on the trans tunnel between the bucket seats cause i didn't want to sit in the back and that car is prob the main reason i got into 2002/1600 bmws.

Out of all the cars my pops owned i would like to have the 510 the most.

Mmmm I'm a huge Datsun nut. I was after a 510 in all honesty, but the E30 fit the bill pretty well and they are much easier to find/cheaper.

I like the 610's and even the 810's because they are like pseudo-Skylines.

Wouldn't changing from a 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder make it ineligible for most types of racing since that chassis was never sold with an I6? I know nothing about the Trans Am series though.
You're right, the Trans Am car used a modified 1.8L inline 4. It produced about 150bhp, but in conjunction with special Nissan-provided parts like fiberglass body panels and a close-ratio 5-speed transmission the cars were extremely potent, even in the larger 2.5L class.

I got confused because it became a fairly common option to swap in the 240Z inline 6 for 510 race cars. My bad :(

^ The road version of the car always had a 4 cyl. He's saying that a racing version had a 2.5L 6 cyl.

Just the other day saw a two tone Datsun 510 wagon that was dropped and in very good condition for its age. Thought to myself that it was a great cruiser. Should have snapped a pic. Next time I see it in town I shall.
