I'm going to tahoe in a few days in my e30. It really isn't that bad. Put on some chains, or grab some 4x100 wheels with snow tires in the rear.
But on the topic, I'm the same age as you, and I was sorta pissed when I went and tried to rent a loaner from a Volvo dealership the other day, while dropping off a parents' car.

Chains aren't the end of the world, if your car isn't lowered too badly.

Well. Don't cause any damage to the car because that's illegal and insurance will not cover you in the event of an accident. I'd be surprised if your parents would do that though. If you hurt someone and they try to sue, your parents are fucked.

Edit: is it out of the realm of possibilities that they'd loan you one of their cars?

If you're a memebr of USAA your underage driver fee will be waived. I was having the same dilemma planning my trip. You may want to check and see if any organizations you transact with offer any deals or anything like that with major car rental companies.

back when I was a youngster, I had my mother rent the cars for me when I came back to visit, it also costs an extra 60 dollars for under 20 drivers insurance. that was about 15 years ago though.

I did it with my friends mom renting the car. We drove from MD to FL and back with no issues. As long as you don't do anything stupid and wreck the car, you'll be fine. Don't get pulled over either!

But wouldnt this advice also be valid in a stolen car??
I would make sure youre covered by insurance or drive your e30. One accident and someone is getting fucked and its likely the person renting

I'd rather pay the extra under-25 fee than risk causing my parents any problems.

do not, for any reason, drive another person's rented car.

Tahoe is gettin' some powder. It's not raining today in the bay area, doubtful that it will be coming down in the sierras very hard today.

oh and south lake isn't a real biggie. Back in HS, I used to drive up to Tahoe like 20+ times per year. Did that in a shitty old Peugeot, several old Volvos, and the E30.

If you go prepared for the elements, and prepare your car minimally, you'll be alright.

I've dodged chain checks with back roads and the sorts in the e30 since it was so low, but i don't recommend it. It's not very safe.

                        Best,

Not quite sure about stolen car, but it will give him trouble if he got in an accident or possibly pulled over and his name doesn't match the registered renter. At most they wouldn't cover him if it's his fault, and worst case scenario in the event of being pulled over, he would get a ticket of some sort. I've driven a friends car across state-lines with out him even being in the car and I was not hassled about being the registered owner and what not.

                            Yes.

OP, steal a car, hang plates, then go to Tahoe.
