Maybe if it had a 6pin on the end of it to pull power from somewhere else.

Have you gotten it working on the onboard graphics yet?

Yes, it works with onboard graphics, but none of the display resolutions available are correct.

They're all either squashed or too wide. And if I change them and reboot, all I get is a bright white screen, no display, just a mouse cursor.

On boot up if you hit ESC it should give you several options. I am trying to remember the exact name from the list you select. Once in there you should be able to run a system check. It will go through all the components on the PC.

Also have you tried switching back to the basic card the PC came with? Does it give the same errors?

Have you tried going back to the original OS for the computer?

You'll need to completely uninstall the nVidia drivers and install the latest correct AMD drivers as well. That's just driver stuff.

Anyway, it might do that for you once it's connected to the internet. If your chipset drivers aren't up to date then it could be causing the issue with the other graphics card.

Have you tried releasing and renewing your ipconfig yet?

Also I am pretty sure it was already mentioned. But have you tried updating/upgrading the BIOS on the computer?

I am having trouble tracking down much information on you Mobo. But the general consensus from the AMD forums is that it will be very difficult to get a BIOS update and running with the newer components you have.

start menu : run : "cmd"

                in DOS window:

                ipconfig /release

                ipconfig /renew

(W7 does still let you open a command prompt, right? still running XP everywhere i can.)

Yes you shouldn't have issues with command prompt in W7.

I honestly think the best course of action here might be purchasing a new mobo with the correct socket type (AM2) and swapping this CPU, GPU, and RAM to the new mobo.

                      What's your results from that?

Swapping hardware isn't going to solve your software issues. Network issue seems DHCP related, you could try going around that with manual IPs and subnet masks, etc. "invalid ip configuration win 7" gives lots of results on google with things to try.

                        ipconfig /release says:

                        "Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while releasing interface Local Area Connection : An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint"

And hitting ESC during boot did nothing, no options for any kind of BIOS options. Have not yet updated/upgraded BIOS, don't know how to do that.

one more line for that command prompt:

                          netsh winsock reset

                          then reboot and re-test network.

having re-read the thread- the currently installed ethernet drivers are the ones that windows sourced itself, mentioned in post 16? if above does not work- download drivers for the chipset (Marvell 88E8056) here: http://www.marvell.com/support/downloads/search.do and swap them over on a thumb drive.

When turning on the pc it should have some text at the lower left hand side of the screen. It should instruct you on how to enter the bios. Once there you should have several options to choose from. You can edit your boot order. Run system diagnostics etc.

No, I downloaded the driver to a USB and installed them on the offending machine.

No dice on that cmd line. ipconfig shows nothing but the same self assigned IP no matter what I do.

When Windows assignes a 169. ip it does it when it a) does not see a connection to your router/switch/dchp box and the tcp/ip in the OS isn't set to static ip for that interface.

So, it's not getting IP or it's not getting a connection (physical) and in the end not getting DHCP offer...

                                - Did the NIC work with Vista before you wiped it?

                                - Does the device manager show it's using a "Integrated Marvell 88E8056 Gigabit" driver as listed on the Acer page?

Does your router/switch show "link" on the port where the ethernet cable is connected to this pos acer?

                                Try another cable?
